My oldest dd just started first grade. She's a bit on the old side because we did 2 years of kinder at home before enrolling her, so she'll be 7 just before Halloween. She's in a mixed age class. I believe there are about 10 first graders who arrive at 8:10, and 9 or 10 kinders, who arrive at 10:20. They all leave at 2:30, except on early dismissal days. It seems like this could be a good arrangement for my dd. Not too many kids, a fair amount of one-on-one learning. I'd like to think she's set up for success. We've spent two years working with her on impulse control and language skills, so I feel like I shouldn't have to worry. But I am anyway! (She has really struggled with attention and impulse control. She's super engaging and social, and it can cause problems at times. So that was a worry, but I think it's negligible.) Have to have something to worry about, right? :LOL
So how does it work out in mixed age classes? I worry about her not making any progress academically AGAIN this year. So far she's made a "color birds" book and "My book of One." At almost 7, working on the number 1 seems a bit- ok, way too easy! We've been trying to ease into understanding 10s places and adding and subtracting double digits. How quickly do they ramp these things up? How much individual attention will she get, do you think? And do teacher usually evaluate kids sometime early in the year to see where they are?
