This is my first thread and actually I thought I sent it and didn´t so her we go again... I have been reading and learning from this group for a long time now and want thank everyone.
Our situation is a bit complicated, Bicultural family (american/British) living in Brazil.
Basically it is a question about older ´kindergartaners´. My son is 5 years old soon to be 6 years old. He has been attending 1/2 day school since he was about 2.5 years old. There we always very child lead types of pre-schools. He has been going to a Brazilian Montessori school for the last two years which he is very much enjoying and really grown in many was there. I wasn´t very keen on this method at first (actually more restrictive than the other coop he was going to ) but it was the best school in this Amazon city we live in. We are now moving to a larger city and I want him and my 7 year old daughter to go to a bilingual (english and portugues) school there. I do home school of english with them presently. The school we are looking at is the British School is much more structured and they believe and I completely agree he isn´t ready to go into what they consider 1st grade because he is reading and writing is very basic and its very academic. I don´t want to push into this situation that he is not ready for so I was thinking of just having him start in their equalent of Kindergarten he would be one of the oldest if not one of the oldest. This was not an issue in the Mont. school because the classes are multi-age and very flexable....I really love it there for him.... He is also a small guy so physically he would fit in.
I just want to know what folks experiences with this is.
It is a rather unique situation in that he will changing schools, methodology, and language. They have been in this bilingual world since he was a baby and my oldest is much more adaptable but he is not so. I don´t have alot of people to bounce this stuff off of so I was hoping for some imput and share experiences.
