Question for people who have had their wisdom teeth taken out

I'm getting all 4 removed tomorrow and will have general anestesia. Here's my question: I just started school today and have lots of reading to do. My surgery is on Friday...by Monday, should I be feeling well enough to read (and remember) a lot of material? Or should I try to do it all tonight? I've never had surgery of any kind before so i have no idea what to expect.

i got my wisdom teeth pulled on a friday, and moved apartments the very next day. i was totally coherant but in some pain.

another question, if i can add this on, can anyone else still feel their teeth sometimes? i totally can...

You should be fine. I can't remember what day I had my wisdom teeth out (I had all 4 w. general anesthesia), but I was pretty doped up that day, and still felt crappy the next day, but much better. I'd relax tonight and put off the reading for a few days, it'll give you something to do while you recover.

Considering that everyone responds to meds/surgery differently, you'll probably get conflicting answers on this. I seem to be really sensitive to anesthesia--I'm "out of it" for a while afterwards. And when I had my wisdom teeth out, I found out I was allergic to codeine, so THAT was interesting. I'd probably get as much reading done as possible before the surgery, but not sweat it if I didn't finish it all. I'm sure your professors will understand and, it being early in the semester, you'll be able to catch up easily.

Then again, some people bounce right back. Hope you're one of those people!

I had all 4 pulled at once. I feel sure I was certainly well enough to read and retain info 2 or 3 days later - no worries.

I am very susceptible to medications and I was working the next day (I'm also a student). Frankly, I probably could've done reading that night, but I was so looking forward to a few days with an excuse not to work!

I had three of my wisdom teeth taken out while in bootcamp. I sleep for most of that day and was fit for full duty the next morning.

But....

I had the last wisdom tooth taken out while I was in school and it knocked me out of commission for two days.

I have horrible reactions to anestetic, so for me, I was still EXTREAMLY foggy a week or two later. But my dh had his done on a Friday, and was back in school by Monday.

Good luck!

I onoy had three wisdom teeth - the upper right never appeared...

Mine were removed one at a time because of decay... my upper left first, then years later, my lower left...

I never had problems with any of them - I was up and out and I drove home. A simple extraction.

The lower right is still hanging in there...

So I guess I am losing my wisdom and not so wise after all?

I've still got all 4..need to get them out eventually..........hate hate hate the idea of being under..told I can do normal extractions....may do 2 at a time that way...2 full out 2 a bit in gum impacted...........dreading it....using bf as an excuse to put it off... :LOL :

I didn't do it under general (just novocaine-too poor as a student). I had my teeth pulled in the late morning and felt well enough to work out at the gym that afternoon.

It's really more your reaction to the anesthesia than the procedure itself. Yes, you will be sore for a few days but should be fully functional and able to do your reading just fine.

Good luck!

Don't want to scare you......

Getting my teeth pulled was HELL!

The pain was unbareable.... Out of the 8 total side affects from the antibiotics, I got 7 of them....the only one I didn't get was black hairy toungue!!!

I was throwing up like crazy, major headaches....oh it was bad....

My advice is to study now,.......just incase.

Good luck!

I only had 2 removed, and I had it done with only local anesthesia. The vicodin I took afterwards totally knocked me out though!!

I was off work for a week.

Having my wisdom teeth out was the worst experience of my life, seriously. I'd go through the pain of childbirth right now in a heartbeat, just to erase those memories.

I had 2 removed (only had 2) under general. I spent 3 days throwing up anything that touch my stomach including pain meds, I laid in a ball and cried in a pain for days, I'd tell dh (dating at the time) I needed to throw up, he'd carry me to the bathroom, hold me over the toilet, I'd puke and he'd carry me back. This is why I had to marry him :LOL

I was in college at the time, missed a week of school and work at at time that I couldn't afford to do either, I was beyond sick it was the worst thing ever.

Oh called the stupid Dr. he brushed it all off as normal and just said to take it easy :

Oh once I stopped puking I could only drink through a straw for a week, couldn't open my jaw.

They didn't put me under but I had no pain so needed nopain medication once the local wore off. a good dentist should be able to pull it off with little or no after pain. I woudl be more worried about how you will respond to the general.

I had a really hard time. Mine were impacted and I was on heavy-duty pain meds for several days. I had mine taken out on a Thursday and do not remember anything until Sunday.

I was off work for about a week, the first two days I threw up from the drugs, and couldn't eat properly for about 3 days.

I remember getting really swollen too and looked like my sister did when she had the mumps...everyone of my "lovely" family members made fun of me for ages...ha..ha :

So many bad experiences here...I am so sorry you all had to go through all that. OMG, I can't even imagine. I guess I shouldn't speak too soon though, huh...I just got them pulled this morning and so far everything is ok. My mouth is quite sore and i've been putting frozen veggie sacks on each side. Bleeding has stopped for now and no nausea or anything...without the pain meds it hurts a lot, especially on the left, and i'm very swollen. I can't imagine going through all that other stuff on top of that you all have my sympathies, even though it is thankfully over for you!
