Whatcha Listenin To? - Page 2

oh my, I am SO glad to not be alone w/ my child being obsessed w/ Kelly Clarkson!!! JAMES has LOVED "since u been gone" since March! He knows all the words (well, his own interpretation of them!) and it's just so cute! He's been off that kick for the past month or so, so that's good, but about once a week we have to pull it out and listen to the first 3-4 songs.

I just love............and can't get enough of "Garden State" soundtrack. DH and I have discovered the SHINS and they're on there and some other fun stuff. Mostly love the FEMALE artists on it. I HATE HATE HATE that female artists totally get the shaft in the music biz b/c that's what I love. Grrrrr..... Watching MTV today and ALL of their "new artists" were guy bands. Glad I'm not a girl trying to make it as a singer these days.

pixie-n-hertwoboys-- who is this: yo mamas big fat booty band

And Zahn, the lyrics you posted are beautiful. Gotta check that one out. Thanks!

I've been listening to Fiona Apple alot lately. Also Pearl Jam, INXS, Sarah McLachlan, Toad the Wet Sprocket. Lovin Kanye, but I don't have any of his cd's yet.

Also I will admit I to sing along to Kelly Clarkson and my little girl is not old enough to blame it on...:LOL

I think the thing with Kelly Clarkson is that she's a really good singer, but her songs aren't that good. They're catchy, but it doesn't seem like very much thought went into writing them and they're not very intricate, musically. But, she can sing.

Ageed. Looking at her stuff from a musically critical perspective, the songs are purely written to catch the pop audiences attention. She did however write several of the songs on her last album which is repectable imho being a musician myself. I think that she is going to evolve as a musician over time... her music will take form the more control she has over it herself, ya know? She has huge potential, hopefully it goes somewhere

Now that I've just completely hijacked this thread :LOL

I LOVE Kelly Clarkson's voice & ITA that the songs (that she's probably contacted to record) do not showcase her talent.

I'd love her to go kinda soul-bluesy.

: ladies. I saw this thread on the main board a few days ago and just had to wander in. As a dedicated music junkee how could I pass up this smorgasboard of musical yuminess? Found plenty of you mentioned so many things that are in my collection and some things that I'd like to give a try. Right now the line up is:

Sleater-Kinney: All of them but One Beat and The Woods are in heavy rotation
Sonic Youth: Sonic Nurse
KMFDM: Nihil
Bob Marley and the Wailers: The Best of the Early Years
Dieselboy: system upgrade
Dead Prez: Let's Get Free
Mahalia Jackson: 16 Most Requested Songs
Red Hot Chili Peppers: Californication
India Arie: Acoustic Soul
Marilyn Manson: Antichrist Superstar

Tons of other stuff but I think I'll stop here, for now...

I love Sleater-Kinney! I haven't had them in heavy rotation for a few months though. All Hands On the Bad One is one of my favorites from them. I don't have The Woods yet, but I heard them play a bunch of songs from that album when they played in LA and it sounds really good.

Big Sleater-Kinney fan here, too! My personal favorite is Dig Me Out.

I've also been listening to Ted Leo obsessively lately. DD loves him, too and always asks to hear Uncle Teddy's music!

OK... I just went to a great show last night in Hartford CT at the Webster Theater. Heard some serious bands, picked up a disc and figured I'd share since we seem to have eclectic taste here.

The headliner, some of you may have heard of. They have a disc out right now (in stores) which is apparently not their 1st. Their name is Cold. Exellent band, great music , good show WOW. I'm gonna locate their site today and see if they have any downloads or clips to share The sound was sort of hardcore/emo I guess. They weren't over the top hard though.

There were 2 opening bands, one I loved and bought the disc and the other I couldn't stand :Puke The bad band (imo) was Smile Empty Soul. The lead singer constantly spit on the stage during the whole set and every other word in the songs was a swear. I don't get it.

The other opener was BASE2. Their sound was hardcore/emo/with a little touch of screamo. But just a touch. Their site is www.base2music.com They were so different, they had the coolest lead singer and a great sound but to top it all off they had an electric violin player! Totally NOT what I expected but awesome!

I thought maybe you Mamas might like to check these bands out.

S-K fans, right on mamas! Those ladies are the absolute cat's meow. Love 'em. The Woods is fantastic. They did a lot of stuff from there when they were here in the ATL a couple of months ago. They played their rear ends off. Excellent stage presence. I liked the Base 2 stuff Milkymommi.

Funny--I was coming to post about Colin Hay (the guy from Men at Work--if anyone else here is old enough to remember them!). One of his songs is on that soundtrack ("I Just Don't Think I'll Ever Get Over You") & I went to check out his other stuff. I can't stop listening to it now!! I think the songs are all beautiful & sad---and that is the kind of mood I am in right now.

I also love "Waiting for My Real Life to Begin."

He has one disc "Man @ Work" that covers a lot of Men at Work stuff, but he does it acoustic & slower & moodier. So great. Please check it out!!

ok got Cold's website. These guys are incredible... I'm so hooked. I went and downloaded a ton of their songs today on iTunes for my iPod. If you visit the site you can hear their current single.

Also I mentioned FlyLeaf so here's that one too since that's what I'm playing on repeat LITERALLY in the car www.flyleafmusic.com check em out especially if you like a cool female vocal.

EmmaJean--Yes! LOVE the Garden State soundtrack, love the Shins and most of the artists on the CD--I get "New Slang" in my head all the time!

Quee--I didn't know Colin Hay was from Men at Work. He's on our Cd wishlist, also Nick Drake, who has a song on the Garden State soundtrack

ATtila, you mentioned Old Crow Medicine Show--heard them on NPR, loved 'em, also on our wishlist. Another great similar "New Grass" band is Yonder Mountain String Band. We've downloaded a ton on their shows on archeive.com

I should print out this thread--always looking for new artists to check out

I checked out the Leela James sight--liked her a lot, what a great voice! Our dd's name is Leela.

Let's see, what else--we're enjoying the White Stripes lately, also Portishead!

Great, fun thread!
