thinking of "Confederacy of Dunces" after Katrina?

Just wondering if there are any other fans of this book, IMO one of the greatest American novels ever written, if not the greatest. "Confederacy of Dunces" by John Kennedy Toole, it is set in New Orleans and is one of the most hillarious and heart wrenching books ever. The author killed himself before the book was published post-humously and went on to win a Pulitzer Prize.

He so vividly portrays life in NO and environs, and I wonder if the world he described will ever exist again.

Great book. I'm trying to imagine which characters would have evacuated right away and which would have tried to ride out the storm. Though many of the themes are universal, the setting is definately unique. Unique and gone IRL.

I can just see Ignatius standing on the rooftops, water gushing through the city, shouting out to the running evacuees, "Hey, where are you all going? What are you all, communiss' or sumthin'?"

Of course, that's right before he stages a revolt against outside help coming into the city, complete with dancing, shaking and flatulence! :LOL

Well remember that Ignatius had a pathological fear of buses and couldn't trust his mother to drive. :LOL

Ignatius would stay. He would be found in the attic in a sheet "remembering" his beloved dog :Puke :

Dh read somewhere years ago that a movie was in the works. Talk of Johnny Depp and Drew Barrymore. Anyone else heard this?

Although I'd heard about it for years, I got around to reading this just last year and found it one of the more enjoyable reads I've had in a long time. It did give me a certain picture of NO and it's funny that you should mention it, as just this morning Conf.ofDunces popped into my head, while thinking about NO.

No no no. Johnny Depp would be horrible in this movie.

John Goodman would be perfect.

Danny Divito would be good except he's only 4 feet tall.

I heard the movie rumor years ago and pictured Oliver Platt as Ignacius.
