you have to find where they eggs are and kill them. there is always a patch of eggs in some wet spot somewhere. when you find them wash them down the drain and pour a LOT of boiling water down the drain to kill them all.
make sure you have NO wet spots in your kitchen and NO food exposed and the trash can sealed and cleaned and emptied daily. try not to put food in the trash. you can put it down the drain if you have a disposal, down the toilet if it's mushy and your septic system is good, or in a compost outside. DON'T compost near the kitchen sink! wipe out the sink after every use, don't leave dishes there.

those are tough, one way to break the cycle is to catch them in liquid. I have seen red grenadine (sp) used. that seems to work but may only limit the trouble. Finding the egg source, as stated above, may be the best way to go.

I'm battling a fruit fly infestation as well. I discovered by accident that they like coffee. If I turn off the coffee pot with coffee still in it, they are attracted to it. Odd, but I may use it to make a trap.
For those who recommended getting rid of the eggs, how do you know where the eggs are if you're keeping your counters dry, don't have food on the counters, and you're taking out the trash promptly? Can they breed in a garbage disposal?
One up side of the infestation is that it reminded me of the song "shoo fly, don't bother me" and I finally learned the lyrics. My 2-year-old sings it all the time now and the 2-month-old loves the song and just smiles and smiles when I sing it. So maybe I should thank the flies for that.
