Coffee while pregnant?

My one and only vice is coffee. I don't drink much anyway but I am having a HARD time giving it up - I have only been alllowing myself like 1/8 of a cup in the morning but I feel guilty! With Ellerie it was easy because the taste was horrid but this time around I don't have the luxury of repulsion. So is it bad for the baby? Can I have 1 cup or 1/2 a cup a day? I have searched and found mixed answers on this one...

Thanks!

Cheryl

Hi Cheryl. Coffee is my vice too. And it also really helps my migraines, so it is especially tough for me to quit. My OB said that up to two cups a day is perfectly safe. IMO, coffee is better than taking medication. From the small amount you are consuming, I'd say you are fine. This is one of those things that there is no one definitive answer, so you have to figure out what works best fo you.

Yep, up to 2 cups per day according to my doc. I also get migraines and being that I cannot take any painkillers while PG, coffee is the closest thing.

I drank two cups a day with both of my babes and they're fine and I managed to get through the day :LOL

How about Diet Coke??? :LOL THAT is my vice : I am down to 1 every 2 days or so, but I just sooooo need that stuff!! Coffee I did ok, I am drinking decaf now, totally not the same, but I'd rather give that up than the diet coke.

ahhh, coffee...

i guess i look at it this way....before finding out, my two vices were cigarettes (yes, i know, horrible mama!) and coffee. i've quit smoking entirely, cold turkey, and so has my husband, so i think allowing myself a little bit of coffee every day will be okay. i had a couple migraines during my last pregnancy, too, and get little headaches quite frequently, and having a little coffee helps

Peeking in from Dec/Jan ...

I had the queasies with coffee first time around, too, and have been practically craving it this time. I compromised by switching to half-caff. (I can't stand decaf.) I still feel a little guilty : but then I think, hey, my body probably wouldn't be "asking" for it if it was so bad for pregnancy, right?!?! :

me too...

But I am stopping anyways. I had my last morning latte today and I am all jittery and queezy... : no more for me.

I think up to 2 cups a day is fine. The studies that I've seen on caffiene having detrimental effects were 4-5 cups per day.

I used to work in a coffee shop and got all these great gourmet coffees for free and oh yummy yum yum. I've never been a heavy coffee drinker but I do enjoy it. DH is an addict though and I've watched him consume almost our entire stash of coffee since we found out. It does look good sometimes but I haven't had any. Haven't really wanted coffee, but I haven't wanted a lot of foods/beverages so...

Thanks mamas! Now I don't feel so bad. The time I miss it most it my afternoon coffee treat. The American version of tea. I ALWAYS sit with coffee at 3:00. LOL.

: me too. I have some coffee every few days. And am having a hard time giving up the diet lime coke. Wah. I don't mind the caffeine but feel really bad about artificial sweeteners. I am cutting the diet soda out as sad as it makes me.

I have been having an Emergen-C in the afternoon and been drinking raspberry fizzy waters which are OK.

In my previous two pregnancies, I really lost the appetite for coffee or diet coke until the second half. We will see what happens this time.....

i went down from 3 cups a day (pre-pregnancy) to 2 (really early on) to 1 now! but i don't think i'll give up that 1.
although with ds i was to nauseous to drink coffee until later in my pregnancy...so far i've had next to no nausea.

Small amounts of coffee are actually more of a problem when you're ttc, than when you're pg. I think you're fine with 1-2 cups a day or 1 diet coke or whatever.

I'm still drinking my 1/2 pot of coffee each day (two big cups). I will switch to decaf when I finish this bag. I drink it mostly because I love the taste and it's my way of relaxing each morning.

But really, mine is a health food. It's Organic, and when I drink decaf I drink swiss water process not chemically decaf, I use distilled water and I sweeten it slightly with Rapadura whole sugar.

Otherwise, I drink my herbal pregnancy tea mixture or distilled water.

I should say, I'm by no means an expert but IMO the caffeine in coffee in moderate amounts can't be as bad as what is in soda pop. This caffeine is naturally occurring whereas soda pop is created in a factory. KWIM?

That said, I did drink a bit of A&W root beer the other day.

MODERATION!
