Dd just had her first morning at montessori & I signed up to bring 2 sancks this month---Any awesome ideas? I do know there is a peanut allergy at school--Any ideas would be great....the kids have a self serve snack area

crackers and cheese, apple slices, orange slices, veggies (not carrots -choking hazard) and dip, little muffins, granola bars (this could be a hard one, cause most are manufactured in plants with nuts), dried fruits in a cup, hmmmm....I'm sure there's more. Let me think.

How about hot air popcorn with parmazan cheese sprinkeled on top, strawberry creamcheese roll-ups(mix creamcheese with jam, spread on bread or wrap, roll up and slice into pinwheels)

We have snack duty tomorrow. We are taking turkey slices rolled up, slices of wheat bread (baking it tonight) and strips of bell peppers (all different colors). They also self serve and these seem easy enough. We don't provide drinks because they just drink water they serve themselves all day.

From our website

FOODS THAT ARE APPROPRIATE FOR SNACK

What to bring for snacks:

Please provide
• One FRESH (not canned) fruit or vegetable snack pre-cut into individual servings
• Additionally, please consider providing a protein to complement the fresh fruit/vegetable such as: nuts, a yogurt dip for the fruit and vegetables, or cheese sticks/slices. We also greatly appreciate donations of snack crackers as an ADDITIONAL ITEM to the vegetable/fruit, however they need to be limited to Wheat Thins, Triscuits, or other crackers that consist of whole grains.

The following lists are by no means comprehensive; they are provided to give you an idea of the types of foods that we recommend.

GOOD CHOICE EXAMPLES
Almonds
Apples
Bananas
Green beans
Carrot sticks
Cashews
Celery sticks
Cheese cubes
Cucumbers
Grapes (cut in half for the 3-6 classroom)
Hard-boiled eggs
Peaches
Pecans
Peppers: green, red, yellow, orange
Plums
String cheese
Tomatoes: grape or cherry (cut in half for the 3-6 classroom)
Turkey
Watermelon

Peanuts: VERY IMPORTANT

Because some children have potentially dangerous allergies to peanuts, do not bring any foods for snack (fine in lunches) containing peanuts or peanut byproducts (such as peanut oil), or foods that may contain peanuts. Labels on processed foods are generally very explicit about the inclusion of peanuts.

What are big hits are mini muffins, yogurt, cheese sticks, fruit, anything on a kabob stick, meat, crackers & cheese, mini sandwiches, cut up cucumber. We are allowed to take 1 treat as long as we have our 2 food group products.

Nuts of any kind and popcorn were off limits due to choking, peanuts are off limits due to allergies, grapes had to be sliced in half.

What I take depends on which group I'm sending it for. For Asha she goes right after dinner so I don't do sandwiches. Nadia goes right before dinner so I will more often.

Ok, thought of a few more:

sliced banana, with a small cup of yogurt
pears or pineapple with cottage cheese
small cup of shelled edamame, paired with something else (this has been a huge hit --something about small children and soybeans. I dunno :LOL)
celery, with cream cheese and raisins.
banana bread
health store brand fig newtons, paired with sliced grapes
broccoli, and sliced cucumber paired with small cup of yogurt dip

I also really like the little sandwich idea. I would stay away from popcorn too -actually, I'm not even sure the school would let you bring it. Its quite a choking hazard.

I signed up to bring snack on Friday, these ideas are great!

I also saw (at Target) a couple different Organic cookie/cake/muffin mixes. They looked yummy. They were in the isle with the regular mixes. I can't remember the brand though.

What about dry cereal? My son LOVES the Kashi "Mighty Bites" he calls it 'the people cereal' :LOL (they are shaped like kids) you could serve them dry w/ some fruit on the side.
My ds cannot share the class snack unless it's on his list I have posted in the classroom since he is anaphalactic to nuts, peanuts, and milk.
I send crackers, fruit, raw veggie, dry cereal.

Think simple. Kids are kids. A cut up apple w/ some low fat yogurt dip would be loved. KWIM?

How about popcorn sprinkled with nutritional yeast (tastes cheesy!), rice cakes with cream cheese and pieces of kiwi, cottage cheese and fruit, or rice cakes with all-fruit spread, little cheese cubes and whole grain crackers.

yogurt and fruit. Different fruits, like star fruits or other things the kids may not have seen, mixed with ones they have. Fresh pineapple. Watermelon! Asst melon balls with a yogurt dip.

Banana bread and other quick breads, celery sticks with cream cheese and raisins, Teddy grahams, animal crackers.

Mix and match!

Forgive me if I repeat what others suggested, but these snacks were all well-received by both the children and teachers at DD's former co-op preschool:

small yogurt cups
string cheese or cubed cheddar
grapes (halved for choking reasons)
cubed melon
mini-muffins (but oh, the crumbs!!!)
apple sauce cups
cheese crackers (Cheddar Bunnies were a big hit)
mini bagels with cream cheese or butter
