... The Leipzig Connection, by Paolo Lionni which deals with the systematic destruction of American Education, and how it came to be.

No, but I think that is a good thesis. I do believe the education system of the US has been dumbed down, and other western nations like my country are following suite.

Sounds facinating----the US is in desperate need of an education revolution, both secondary and post secondary--but we are in desperate need of a revolution on many fronts...

There is a brilliant chapter on what went wrong with the US education system in Christopher Lasches book, "The Culture of Narcissism" (1979). He made a lot of sense.
I believe John Gatto Taylor says some great things about why it is so bad too. He was that teacher in NY who was best teacher for the whole of the US for quite a few years running.

James Taylor Gatto and Charles Sykes have also written extensively on this subject.

Samuel Blumenthal has also.

No, but I did read Michel Foucault and Paulo Friere(sp?).
The chapter on Panopticism and how it is used not only in the prison system, schools, but also the L&D floor was really eye-opening for me.

I have never even heard of The Leipzig Connection, by Paolo Lionni, before. I will have to check it out. Thanks for posting about it.
