Congratulations, Lillian!!!! I just bought 4 pairs of fleece CD pants from you not too long ago. Glad I got 'em when I did since you obviously have some more important concerns at the moment!

i thought i would add my birth story

the birth of keren naomi

i woke at 4:45am from a weird dream involving pain in my lower abdomen. as i woke more i realized that it was no dream, i was having a real contraction, not any of those painless and irritating bh's i had been having for days. 10 minutes later i had another and then again 10 minutes later. i liked the way this was going! i headed for the hot tub since my mw encouraged me to labor there and it was just perfect – the sun was coming up, animals were frolicing in the yard, and it was peaceful. i spent an hour in there and had at least 6-7 more ctx.

contractions then went to every 7 minutes for a while and then every 5 minutes. they were still very manageable and i could talk through them. i tidied up the house. phoned the mw and told her i would not be coming in for my 10am appt and she warned me that things could change quickly. they did and suddenly i was contracting every 3 minutes and needing to breathe alot. decided around 11:15 that it was time to go so we packed up our stuff and called my friend, who was going to watch ds, to tell her that we were on our way.

i got to the hospital admitting desk and the woman said ‘are you lillian?’ and handed me my paperwork, all ready to go! some service!

got up to the birth center and as i walked through the doors i started to cry. dh looked at me like i was nuts. he thought i was scared but i just said i couldnt believe this day had come. i imagined walking into the birth center for so long and here i was! stupid emotions.

they showed me to my room at exactly noon – one of the 3 large suites they had (they only have room for 6 women in the center). i changed into a gown and my mw checked my progress. i was completely effaced and 6 cms!!!! we were in shock, as it took me like 10 hours of intense labor to get to 6 last time... right after the exam my contractions got wayyy stronger and about 2 minutes apart. i found it very comfortable to labor standing up and leaning over the bed with dh on the other side holding my hands. the ctxs were very intense and i had to moan through them. the mw would compress my hips during every ctx which helped tremendously. at 12:40 my water broke in a big gush, soaking my gown so it was time to get naked. and once again, my fluid had meconium in it (my kids like to poop in utero...). so they decided to put me on 30 minutes monitoring to see if the baby was ok (previously they would just listen during every 4th ctx or so). i think dh liked the monitors bc he could watch the intensity of the ctx and help me through it better. oh, and i threw up a few times.

at 1pm diane checked me again and i was a 9 with just a little cervical lip left. i also felt tired from being on my feet so i tried to labor in bed in various positions, none of which felt good and made the pain worse. she asked me if i felt the need to push and i really couldnt answer. i thought maybe a little. so we tried just lightly pushing at the end of a few ctx but i really couldnt focus and find the right way to do it. i was getting a bit discouraged bc i thought that if it continued this way i could never push the baby out.

i gave up on the other positions and went back to my original standing position and had a few mega ctxs. then, all of a sudden the urge hit me. this is what i had been waiting for! and without thinking or saying anything i squatted down and pushed out with the force of a locomotive engine and crowned her head. i could feel her coming out, it was so surreal. dh had been taping a few tidbits here and there and the video camera was currently on pause. he let go of me briefly to go turn it back on so we wouldnt miss it. even diane was a bit unprepared. but there was no stopping me at this point, the baby was coming out. they told me to stop pushing for a second but honestly, i couldnt. boom, she was out at 2:05. she could have hit the floor for all i know.

my next urge was to stand up so i wouldnt collapse on her but when i did the said ‘no no no!’ bc of the cord. so i crouched back down and then we got up together into the bed and she went on my belly. dh cut the cord after about 5 minutes but unfortunately didnt get to catch her since i needed him in front of me, holding me up.

i had a small tear which diane said she could fix in 3 stitches but that it could also be left alone, which i opted for. i didnt mind having stitches, i just didnt want to get stitches.

she nursed almost immediately and had no problems with the meconium. she has a ton of black hair, like ds did (who is now blonde). her eyes are dark, but hard to tell exactly what color. diane weighed her about 30 minutes later and she was 7lbs 14oz and 19.5 inches long.

we packed up everything and walked in our house at 7:30pm. every time she cries ds yells ‘oh no!’ and runs over. he likes to hold her and kiss her cheek and beep her nose.
