Using Brita filter and storing water in glass

Just wanted to share a tip and thank all you MDC mamas for helping to make life better with all the great info I read here a while back about how Brita pitchers are made of the "bad" plastic that leaches, and I finally got around to setting up a new water "system" in our home. I was amazed at how much better the water tastes and realized that we had gotten used to a plastic aftertaste without knowing it.

I should say that the best thing would probably be to get a better filtration system that installs in the sink, but we're renters. So we recently started using a glass jug that has a spigot and a flip top for pouring. We filter the water in a brita pitcher, tidy up the kitchen while waiting for the water to filter down, then transfer the water immediately to the jug. When we're done, we just store the filter in a tall glass jar filled with water to keep the filter hydrated.

The jug we have is part of the Martha Stewart Everyday line at K-mart, but you could probably find one at any dollar store.

The best part is knowing we're cutting down our exposure to plastics. We still are a long way from phasing out plastic containers entirely, but it's pretty convincing when you can taste a difference right away.

Great tip mama, thanks!

one thing, you're not supposed to let the carbon filter dry out between uses, or it loses it's activation. Might want to take it out of the pitcher and put it in some water.

you can get the brita filters that is attached to the faucet and then fill whatever you want with water to store it, e just fill up one glass at a time and the one we have is a different brand but brita makes them to

Pookietooth--thanks for mentioning the filter. I forgot to add that in between filtrations, we take the filter out and store it in a smaller glass jar with water (we use the tall Trader Joe's peaches jar, but probably any clean pickle jar would work). We keep it in the fridge to prevent any bacteria from growing.

We're moving to a new place soon and hope to install a filter by the sink before long!

That's a great idea! We use our Brita pitcher, but it's the only plastic we use in the kitchen right now.

Anybody know how much leaches into cold water, when it's replaced constantly?

We have a PUR sink filter. You can take it on and off when you move so there's no problem if you're renting. Just save the part of the faucet that you have to remove. One of the reasons that we use a sink mount instead of a pitcher (in addition to the plastic leaching) is that the microbes that the cholorine kills start growing back when water is left sitting. This is according to my micromolecular biologist friends.
