Need help...Aureus staph infection

Hi ladies,
I posted this on another board but thought maybe you all could help me out...

Hi everyone,
I went to the dr around 2 weeks ago because my right big toe hurt (a small part of the toenail was a grayish color), turns out, I have a Aureus staph infection under the toenail which I think I got from triming my toenails. The dr said I should go on abx (keflex) which I declined EBF my 5 mo. old, and she was ok with that because by the time we found out it was a staph infection, my toe didn't hurt anymore...it really only hurt for maybe a day. Now, it still doesn't hurt, but when I press on my toenail, there is still infection that oozes out (just a tiny amt, this happened in the beginning too) Anyway, does anyone know any kind of treatment besides antibiotics???????? I really don't want to have to go there! BTW, now my left big toe seems to be infected too (oozing) Thanks so much! Michelle

Basically, I talked to a nurse at the dr's office today and they think I should do the keflex, I've been debating it all day and I think I'm going too...Would you??? I'm just so worried, don't want anything to happen to my baby, I have never had to use abx but I don't want this infection to enter my bloodstream, kwim. Thanks for any advice, thoughts.

Ouch. If you have a Staphylococcus aureus infection, you should consider your options completely... maybe someone here can look up Keflex in their Dr. Hale's... If the keflex isn't compatible with breastfeeding, I would ask my doc about alternative abx.... very rarely are they limited to just one choice. I'm not really keen on abx, but WRT S. aureus I probably would.

According to Hale's Medications and Mother's Milk (2004), Keflex is L1 (Safest) lactation risk category. The scale is L1 (safest) to L5 (absolutely contraindicated). Only minimal amounts of keflex are secreted into breastmilk.

Please, please accept treatment for your staph infection!!!! I literally was an hour from dying from a systemic staph infection that colonized my heart and kidneys when I was 17... Two monthes in the ICU, a prosthetic heart valve, and eight years later, I'm fine, but I very nearly wasn't...

Just my $.02, but be careful!
