irritation in the fat folds of chubby baby wdyd?

My dd is super fat she has a few chins lol, there is some red irritation in one of the folds, its really red and looks sore. I am sure lots of other babies have this, what did you do? I have been making sure to dry it really well (which is nearly impossible to get in there) but should I put something on it? she drools a lot (4months old) so I am sure the wetness is a factor, I just wanted to know what other mamas do thanks

What *not* to do...

We had this problem with DD. She had 2 teeth by 4 months and drooled like crazy. Silly first time parents that we are, we thought wearing a bib to collect the drool would help. Instead, her chins just got more irritated We also tried powder (corn starch), but this seemed to make a "sand in your bathing suit" effect when she turned her head.

In the end, 1) using a wet washcloth to keep her neck clean, 2) trying (as best as possible) to keep her face/chins dry and 3) time! worked.

She's six months old now and is down to only 2 chins

I wipe his fold with witch hazel. I don't know if I should or not but I do and it seems to help. I try to get it to dry before letting it "fold" again. It's hard to do that though because he doesn't like having his neck arched back like that.

I'd put some diaper cream or calendula on the irritation. Since it's in a fold, it's no big deal to use the diaper cream, it will help protect against moisture. Several companies make diaper cream with calendula.

You might want to find out if it could be a yeast infection-- it may not just clear up on its own. DS had yeast in his neck folds (I know, yuck!) and we put nystatin cream on it and it cleared up in a few days, after we had spent weeks trying to dry it out in there and never succeeding. Haven't had a problem since. HTH

Lol, I have never been lucky enough to have a babe with neck folds, but in the past I have used Burts Bees Talc Free Baby Powder. That stuff is so pure, you don't have to worry about it being near their face. It works like crazy too.. it's base is french bentonite clay, not talc.

Thanks everyone for the quick suggestions

anthasam, I liked your "don't" list lol

velvet, I think witch hazel is okay, I put a tiny drop of tea tree oil in the bath wash, to keep anything from growing in the fold
koalamom- that was just the suggestion i needed
tatermom- This redness is new (the past 24 hours) I don't think it looks yeasty, but that is what I am worried about it turning into.

I washed her up with baby wash with a tiny amount of tea tree oil added, and dried dried dried, put on some burts bees diaper cream and nursed her to sleep so maybe it will be gone by morning, I just think this is going to be an ongoing battle since she just keeps getting fatter and fatter lol

I use Weleda Calendula cream, (not hte kind with the zinc) or my mom's calendula salve if it is really red, and Burt's Bees Apricot Oil once a day or so as a preventative. I put it in the armpit creases too.

This happened to my dd and it took lotramin to finally heal it but it still come sback (it's back today as a matter of fact). Our ped. told us it would be hard to heal this kind of yeast in this area during the summer months. I would make sure this sin't what is wrong b/c it can be itchy and painful. You can also sprinkle a little corn starch in those chub rolls to help keep them dry.

I just make sure it's clean and dry, esp. after a nursing session, because dd would just let the milk dribble out of her mouth, lol. Disposable baby wipes work well to get the double (or triple) chins clean.

Lansinoh...because it is ok to ingest. My dd had the same issue as a baby (my ds just started this). I was afraid to put anything in her neck folds that couldn't go in her mouth because at that point, everything was in her mouth. The Lansinoh really worked. It kept the sore area dry and clean.

We used diaper rash cream as well as trying to keep it clean and dry. It went away fast.
