Appropriate Dolls - Page 2

well, I never played with Barbies as a kid because I thought they felt strange, all plasticky (sp?) and strange. But DD likes Barbies at 4 yo, but I think it is because she sees other girls with them.

She did get some Barbies for her recent birthday, and even though I object to them on many levels, I decided I would keep my mouth shut and let her decide. Basically, she has played with them once or twice and I have quietly put them in the basement bag of 'give away toys" and will wait a few months to see if she mentions them again.

She digs the groovy girls that I and my mom got her and has asked if Santa could bring her some for Christmas. I like them better because they are soft and cute and multicultural in terms of their skin colors and names. Her favorite is "Oki" right now.

Oh, I get it. I'll be taking notes, myself. What is your opinion of the Groovy Girls? Are they too objectified? I definitely don't like the Bratz, myself, and would never have Barbie stuff, so I'm looking for a great option, too.

We like:

Groovy Girls and they have cool clothes. Also for the gotta have Barbie things I gave in finally. I hate Barbie and wasn't allowed to have Barbie but in part of my unschooling learning I decided it wasn't my job to decide that it was appropriate or not to have a toy. She got a Barbie and really has never played with it at all. She would much rather play with her Polly Pockets or the Disney Princess Dolls.

Actually she prefers playing with her brothers.

Wow, the Only Hearts girls look really cute! We've been trying to decide how to handle this. DD just turned four, and she got a (ready for this?) Disney Barbie for her birthday. It's like the people don't even know us! LOL. Bonnie of course, loves her, but when we talked about it, we decided that maybe this doesn't match our philosophy so we're going to exchange her for a more appropriate doll. I'm willing to concede on Barbie, because I'm finding that denial is only feeding the beast, but moderation is key, so Disney Barbie is a little over the top.

Anyway, when I mentioned to DD that there is another sort of doll I'd like her to consider, the first question she asked is "Does she have breasts?" She wants her doll to nurse her babies. Awwwww! Barbie just scored 10 points in my book just by merit of having breasts, realistic or not. Do the Only Hearts girls have breasts that you can see? We already pretend with other dolls, so I think it's really important to DD to have a doll that has *visible* breasts.

Only Hearts dolls are girls, not women, so they don't have breasts and probably don't have babies to breastfeed. My daughter breastfeeds her dolls. She just pretends to have breasts, just like one breastfeeding mama in my daughter's babysitting co-op. She doesn't have visible breasts, not with her clothes on, that is.

Another vote for Groovy Girls (and Boys!).

I just bought a couple for dd1, for Christmas (yes, I'm Christmas shopping already! :LOL ). I think they're great. If she doesn't play with them, I will!

That is exactly why my DD says she loves Barbie, "because she has big nummies just like Mommy!" and yes, Barbie does nurse the Kelly Club dolls occassionally.
