More ammo to support BF past 1 year

I got my lovely Enfamil TODDLER formula coupons in the mail today. (I have been getting checks, coupons and free formula since they found out I was pregnant!) Anyway their ad was trying to convince that toddlers need formula too, because cows milk does not provide enough nutrition.

So, we all know that breast milk is far superior to formula. And, if the formula companies feel that toddlers need formula, then toddlers certainly need breast milk!! They did not say anywhere on the ad that I could see, that breast milk is best, although they should... BUT it is some good ammo to toss at people for giving you a hard time about nursing past a year! (At least I thought so anyway!)

I had read somewhere that the only reason doctors do not recommend formual routinely past one year is because it is expensive. I hope someday the US catches up with the rest of the world in recommending nursing until at least 2 years of age, if not longer.

My FF friends would ask me, "Are you still nursing?" and I'd ask, "Does your child still take a bottle?" After all, the pedis recommend bottle weaning at 15 months. My friends would smile and say, "of course" and "Yes, I just lied to the doctor and said he/she was weaned." And I'd say, "Of course we are nursing" They would sigh a sigh of relief, and so would I. We were on the same page after all! We were doing the best for our child, doctors be damned. DD 1 weaned at 3 1/2 years, the day I went into labor with DD2. DD2 is 23 months old and is still nursing. I've been nursing continuously for 5 1/2 years and I still love it.

That is a great point! I'm going to remember that.

Although, of course, strictly speaking, the "follow-up" formulas are not worth the $$, if someone can't breastfeed they're better off sticking with regular formula (as I did). Dr. Sears did a good analysis of this.
