This caught my eye because I have just finished reading a memoir called "Running with Walker" written by a father with a low functioning autistic son. Anyway, the boy's name is Walker, and Walker was always a terrible sleeper, often up for hours a night. When he was pretty old (9,10,11--I'm not exactly sure) his parents had a sleep study done and found that Walker was having mini seizures through the night, which was what was disturbing his sleep. When he received medication to treat the seizures, his sleeping improved dramatically.

Also, on the note of nursing any 4 year old--my son just weaned a little bit past his 4th birthday. I think any kid that hangs on to it this long has a hard time weaning. My son still likes to rub my tummy when he goes to sleep or just wants to be close to me. One day when I was getting irritated because he was untucking my shirt, he said, "But I want some skin!" and I told him there was plenty of skin on my arms, he countered with, "I want your warm skin!"

We used a weighted vest for a while with my son who has aspergers. We used it for about 10-15 mins before major transitions and bedtime and it helped to calm him.

Otherwise, we just stick with a routine - some days it works, others it does not. Good luck, mama!
