I would like to encourage those with public school kids to attend your next school board meeting and see if they have developed or are in the process of developing a Local Wellness Policy. All schools participating the federal school lunch program must have one in place by the start of the 2006-2007 school year. I am a new member of our board and brought it up at our last meeting and was a bit shocked that no one knew we were supposed to have one. I guess the gov't didn't get the word out!!
Boards developing a policy should include parents, community members, and others in process, so it would be a great way to get involved in your child's school/future school. Anyway, here is more information: http://www.fns.usda.gov/tn/Healthy/w...uirements.html
Even before knowing we needed to have one, I wanted to get a nutritional policy in place. I was displeased (to say the least) to hear that my school was selling fruit roll-ups, moonpies, and "orange drink" at breakfast, so a good nutritional policy is a must!
I am heading up our committee, so if anyone HAS a policy they would be willing to share, please pm me. Thanks!!
