has anyone read BIRTH?

its a "natural" book about childbirth preparation from the 70's and it was written by katherine something or other. anyways there are birth stories and in one of them the mother to be is a model and she is trying to decide if she should take a job that will require her to be away for four days and she cant take the kid. the ped tells her if its important then go. he then tells her to never sacrifice anything for her kid. she tells some anecdote about some mom who never sacrificed anything for her kid then told the child whe the child was grown "i've never sacrificed anything for you. youve been nothing but a plus for me" What!!! how do you not sacrifice for your child? what about the thousand times as day when you have to decide between your needs and the childs'? i actually pondered this for awhile until i came to the conclusion that my first instincts were right on: that it was totally ridiculous. any thoughts about this?

Yes, I remember reading something like that when I was pregnant in 1980, at a time when there was still lots of pressure to go back to work and put the little one in childcare asap.

I bucked the trend and was a SAHM for ten years.

After that , my DH was a SAHF. We worked together and worked it out.

There seems to be alot of parents out there trying to convince themselves that they can lead a life just like before the little ones cam along, with no alterations...my question is not how can a parent pull this off....but why would you want to? If you can't evolve and expand your horizons for your children then what is the point?

But everyone has thier own way...and who am I to claim that there is one right way to parent.
