cod liver oil

I was thinking about trying to give my little girl some of the above to help stem her tooth decay. My husband pointed out that cod liver oil would probably have mercury in it from the fish source, which seems like a really valid concern. Does anyone have info about this? (We don't let her eat tuna, and even I don't eat it because we BF, due to the mercury.)

Hg doesn't tend to concentrate in the oil ... and there are reputable brands that test clean of metals and PCBs including Nordic Naturals and Carlson Labs.

Thank you for the tip, Jane. I will look for one of those brands.

I have a couple of bottles of the Carlson for Kids CLO. I also have a bottle of the Green Pastures Blue Ice...

I have been reading about some manufacturers of CLO processing the natural vit. D out of the oil, then adding synthetic vites back in.

Are both of these brands of CLO the "right" kind?

DS really hates the Blue Ice, and I admit it's pretty smelly. It's such a struggle to get him to take it, I'm thinking of reverting to the Carlson.

Oooh, an old post of mine... I would only recommend the Blue Ice or Radiant Life CLO now. Carlson's has been under attack for stripping vitamins, you need the high vitamins!

What flavor Blue Ice do you have? Radiant Life is plain, and Blue Ice comes in cinnamon and orange which might work better.

Oh that stinks. We use Carlsons. My naturopath pushes it. I guess she hasn't heard about that. What a bummer.

ETA; Jane what about Nordic Naturals? Any good?

Nope, Nordic strips vitamins too. The reason why Blue Ice and Radiant Life are so good is that they have approx. 5,000 IU of A and 500 IU of D per half teaspoon. General recs are 1/2 t. for small kids, and 1 t. for larger kids and adults. But this is very much based on a traditional diet with other animal sources of A and D. I think most people need to take more. Especially if facing a "health crisis".

For ex. I just had a vitamin D test in the beginning of the summer (with several weeks of sunshine under my belt) and my D levels were not optimal, not surprising I guess for someone in Mass.

Many vit. D researchers are rec 3,000 to 4,000 IU per day for adults. There are so many disease which are dependent on vitamin D deficiency. And reportedly Dr. Oz on Oprah is becoming a vit. D messiah since Oprah found she is very D deficient! Being AA and living in low sun Chicago makes that a sure thing.

Twinlab CLO is lower in vitamins... by half... but still rather good and can be easier to find for some people. It's certainly much better than Carlson or Nordic Naturals and does come in flavors too. They do not add any synthetic vits and do monitor for contaminents. Helpful to use in cases of depression/anxiety/ADD or other areas where you need very high omega 3s/DHA/EPA and want to take several tablespoons/day.

Personally I have been taking 1-2 tablespoons/day of high vitamin CLO since my test and feel fantastic. More energy, more joy in everyday life (despite serious stress). I am even that much more a believer.

Awesome thanks.
And sorry to hijack!

This is a bummer! I have one and a half bottles of the Carlson in my fridge...

In reading the ingredient list, I see that the only ingredient is CLO, vitamin E, and natural lemon flavour.

Are they not required to list the addition of synthetic vitamin D?

Shoot...just reading this...we just started DD on the Nordic Naturals oil. Is it worth finishing off? She also takes an additional vit. D supplement because the oil doesn't have much in it, but I didn't realize there was something better (and I don't think my co-op had any other brands anyway).
