How often does your DC get sick?

At dd's previous school all children were examined for signs of illness when coming in for the day and if they had any they were sent home. I guess public school's don't do this and as a result 2 days into public school dd is sick! (we visited a couple times a few days before and i'm guessing she cought it then) She's been sick like 1, maybe 2 times in the last year and got over it pretty easy. Last night was a nightmare She had immune deficiency issues when she was younger so I keep an eye on any illness she gets but we've been doing really well the last 2 years and I finally felt it was safe to wean her on her 5th birthday. I had no clue she would be going to public school and now I'm beginning to regret it. I'll see what happens over the next month or 2 but do kids get sick a lot when attending public school?

Public school, private school, preschool, they always get sick. Your preschool sounds like it was incredibly active in monitoring for sickness (I'm jealous). At our preschool last year, children were often sent by working parents when they really, really, really should have been kept at home. It was a fun, vomitesque year for everyone in our family.

I got a book called "Superimmunity for Children" that has a lot of great nutrition-based info on building the immune system. Another theory holds that children's immune systems do not fully kick in until age 5 or 6, although I think it's also interesting that this is the age that they quit wiping snot everywhere.

We also emphasized hand-washing before snack and lunch (even if other kids aren't doing it) and noticed a big difference in illness.
