I was thinking about this the other day - why is it that so many shows with a death theme have cropped-up in the last several years? Six Feet Under (best show ever), Dead Like Me, Family Plots ... uhh there's more I just can't think of them.
My personal hypothesis is that as a culture we are working through our realization that (since 9/11 and media broadcast terrorism) Americans are susceptible to attack, and mortal as a whole. I think it's part of an en-masse grieving process ... as individuals, part of grieving is the realization of one's own mortality, right? So it makes sense that perhaps we are exploring this theme through drama, comedy, etc on television (America's favorite medium). Just an idea ...
