Anyone homebirth their first? - Page 3

Don't let your mom get you worried about this, lots of people have their first babies at home with no problems. I had my 1st at home after a long labor and he was 10lb 5oz and I just had my twins at home after 1.5 hours of labor. Both labors went great and I would not have wanted it any other way. I would suggest that if your mother is not comfortable with what you are doing that you not have her there when you give birth. You don't need any negative thinking durring labor.

Proud of it. Will do it again with the next

I had all four of mine at home.

I honestly cannot imagine giving birth in the hospital, except in an emergency. No privacy, policy and rules, the discomfort of trying to take care of a very intimate bodily function in a strange, clinical place, not to mention the non-natural management of labor that is ubiquitous in hospitals...

No thank you!

I'm gonna answer a question I'm not sure you asked which is "how do I deal with Mom freaking out over my first time HB?"

First off, I would sit down with Mom and say, I want to give you the info you need to have, and I would review with her your back up plans, let her know what the midwife carries in terms of equipement, how various emergencies would be handled, etc. I say this because I've discovered that many people don't know this stuff, they think MW just sit there, and don't have any help available if it is needed, and HB mommas will just let emergencies go untreated.

Then depending on how you are feeling and how she is reacting, you can either offer to answer more questions as they come up, or if you feel she is just going to keep harranging you, then gently close the subject, with "I want you to know that I will be safe, and the baby will be safe, but I don't want to talk about this anymore, I need to use my energy to get ready to have this baby."

I had an amazing home water birth of my first (and so far only) Annie on April 21st. I'd do it again today if I could, it was one of the most incredible experiences of my life

Thank you everyone for your replies! It's wonderful to hear all of your stories. You've definately eased my mind on the subject.
I invited my mom to come to our next prenatal appointment, so hopefully after she meets and talks to the midwife she'll be less nervous herself.

Both of our daughters were born at home. It was the only way I could imagine welcoming them into the World, and they were each beautiful births.

I know when we were planning our first homebirth, there were MANY quizzical looks (and a few comments) from others who thought it was crazy/naive/arrogant/whatever to have your first baby at home. I couldn't understand this.

Wishing you a beautiful birth!

I haven't read the replies (life with a new baby SERIOUSLY curtails online time, lol), but I had a homebirth with my first. I have a blog on my journey into mama-hood, and I wrote about our experiences here:

and here:

if you're interested.

Good luck!

I also started out at a birthing center here in Phoenix. For various reasons, I ended up having a homebirth. I feel so blessed that my first birthing experience was one of such joy. If you are at peace with your decision to have a homebirth, don't second guess yourself because of another's fears.

I homebirthed my first (and second and third). I'm so glad I did. I wouldn't bive birth anywhere else. They have all been incredible experiences. I saw no need to have an horrible hospital birth before I was "allowed" to have a homebirth. Just trust your instinct.

Just chiming in here. I had my first at home and will have all future babies at home too. DW had our first son at a hospital, but my first pregnancy and son was born at home. Hospitals are for sick people, and I was not sick.

My first was born at home! And my second and third have been born at home as well. My mom had to c-section births and was scared about mine. My parents also thought I didn't know what I was getting myself into and that I was "too young" because I was 19 when my first was born. I had a wonderful homebirth with her though, and we've had wonderful homebirths with #2 and #3 as well! It's an amazing experience.
