I want to start to learn to sew but am overwhelmed by the number of machienes out there. Does anyone have a suggestion on which is good for a beginner?

My mom gave me this for Christmas and I absolutely love it. Gorgeous illustrations and very sweet ideas inside. Plus it's just structured enough so that I can be creative about what I include...

This potty is great - excellent value & performance! (plus it's cute!) My 9 month old DS took to it right away. He is a big boy (30 in. tall - feet not quite on floor - & 27 lbs.) and this is...

This book feels good in your hands. The paper is heavyweight, and the illustrations flow perfectly.

my suggestion would be to get the best you can afford, be it at a garage/yard sale (nice older model - all metal), ebay (same thing, nice older/all metal model machine, kenmore, bernina, pfaff, etc.) or a new machine from a sewing shop (still make sure it's a good brand and test run them at the store before you put money on it) you really don't want the cheapest machines out there as they wobble and you can ~never~ get the tension right and they'll give you more headaches than you care for!
if you do buy at a sewing shop, try to wait until they have a sale, or buy a floor model, or buy a refurb machine from them
if you're going to be making something with as many layers as diapers have, you really want a machine with a motor that can handle it, otherwise you'll have just wasted good money (and usually $100 is not enough for a brand new machine unfortunately
)
HTH!
ps ~ for what it's worth, I use a white 2999, and a pfaff hobby 1042

I second that. $100 will NOT buy you a good new machine, but it'll buy you a great older machine.
I have a Kenmore from around the 60's and it's so sturdy. It will put up with anything.
