bad news - update

Thank you for all the thoughts and prayers. I wanted to update you all as to what happened.

I went back for my HCG yesterday. It grew to 5000 and my OB wanted to do another u/s, although she didn't expect to see much change from the day before, because the number grew by 50% (instead of the min. 66%). I went in at 2 to have the u/s and it took the tech all of maybe 5 minutes to determine that it was indeed an ectopic pregnancy. The growth in my tube had doubled in size since Friday - from 2 cm to 4 cm and the baby had a heartbeat.

Because of the size and heartbeat, they weren't comfortable giving me the shot to terminate the pregnancy. So, I had to have surgery to remove the baby. They were concerned enough about it that they pulled the surgical team in and did it last night around 7:30 - it would have been ealier, but it took me a while to decide how I wanted to do it (under general laproscopically (sp?) or with a spinal and a much larger cut). They told me I couldn't leave the hospital until it was done.

In the end, I chose to do the laproscope although I'm terrified of general anesthesia because my OB promised me I could go home that night if I did it that way and that the recovery would be easier. They let me go home around 11:30 last night, after showing that I could eat, drink, and potty on my own.

My OB said told my husband that she was really glad that they did it when they did because it looked like my tube was leaking and close to rupturing. They did save my tube though, which I was hoping for (but not expecting).

It doesn't hurt nearly as much as I'd expected it to. Strangely enough, my neck/shoulder hurt more than my stomach. I called my OB today to check on the shoulder pain and she thinks it's a pulled muscle from when they did the anesthesia and that it should go away in a couple of days.

I just can't believe that I was so happily pregnant less than a week ago. I saw a heartbeat on the u/s, which should have been an incredibly joyous event, but it has definitely made things harder since I *saw* the heart beating...even if it wouldn't possibly have survived.

Thanks again for all the prayers and thoughts.

Ectopic pregnancies are indeed painful. Have they saved your tube? The shoulder pain could be from the gas that they put in you in order to operate. I remember that being the most painful thing after the surgery. In March they found an ectopic on my rught tube and I had surgery as soon as they found it. I never experienced anything more painful(emotionally more than physically) in my life. 4 months later I got pregnant and although I haven't seen the baby in the uterus, the pregnancy is going better than last time.
Just rest as much as you can and take care of yourself. I don't know what your doctor said about when to try again, but as much as I know 3 months at least is recommended to let your body get back.
Best to you and so sorry you had to go through this.

PS. I found a lot of info at www.ectopic.org They also have forum board there... I found it useful...

i have heard that shoulder pain, especially on the left side, can be a sign of an ectopic pregnancy.

I am sorry
I experienced a great deal of neck/throat/shoulder pain after my D&C. I believe it was from the anethesia.
