Well,I saw the movie last night--
it was sad & scary in a way--The plot is about a TB drug given out in Africa-the Pharm company is skewing the effectivness results & hiding the deaths -actually burying the bodies with quicklime-a lady who has a Dr friend finds out about them & writes a report to be made public but she is killed-her husband then has to put the puzzle together .
It will make you think!!
If anyone has a link to add ,please do so.
-there is a Dr of naturopathy who has a webpage about actual experimental med & vaccine trials that have gone on in several countries -Dr Carolyn ??

The Constant Gardener- Le Carre

Just read it, it's really good. I'd like to see the movie now.....

Interesting. I wanted to see this movie, but now I want to see it now. This story echos some of the feeling I think a lot of people have now towards the big pharmacutical companies that seem to rule the US. It's certainly possible that whoever made this movie is trying to make a statement; corruption like this may be all too common I fear.

I really want to see this! A friend of mine saw it last week and LOVED it.

I am reading the book, plan to see the movie when I'm done. I'm delighted, because not only is the book really good, I love love love Ralph Fiennes.

I'm not that big a John Le Carre fan (have tried to read other books of his and did not finish any of them) so am pleasantly surprised to find The Constant Gardener moving along at a good clip plus the premise of a love story told in flashbacks with one of the people dead is working well here.

That's interesting, because that's how they structure the movie, too. I saw it a couple of months ago and I liked it, but I think I was thrown off by a preview or something that called it a "suspense thriller" which it certainly is not. To me, at least, it was obvious who the "bad guys" were and what was going to happen. I kept waiting for a twist that never came, KWIM? I think I would have enjoyed it more if I hadn't gone into it with that expectation.

I agree with whoever said that it was kind of like it was supposed to be a shocking expose that pharmaceutical companies are not in it for the warm fuzzy feelings they get from helping people. Call me cynical, but that was not breaking news to me..

I am so excited to see this movie. It's on my Netflix list. Think I can wait that long? :LOL

My mom said it was fantastic and really eye opening...I can't wait to see this one.

I really liked this movie...better than most movies I've seen lately, but I haven't seen many... It was heartbreaking...which is a good thing in a movie--in my opinion.

I borrowed the book from the library and made several attempts to read it. I kept feeling like I wasn't smart enough to keep up with some parts, or just couldn't get a feel for the characters, and never got far. I would like to try again, I also would like to blame my lack of a grasp for the book on sleepiness

I have been trying to avoid watching the movie before reading the book, but I think I may, and then give the book another go.

It has taken me since the day this movie came out on DVD until today to finally rent it! I had to stalk the video store ladies! Sounds like it will be worth it.

This is definately one of the better movies from 2005.

Haven't read the book, though I will someday, but felt the movie was brilliant. So, I can only imagine how good of a read it must be.

i was disappointed in this movie, partly because there was no real expose for me. this is a topic of interest already and then they never really went far enough with the story. dh fell asleep and when i told him nothing else "happened" in the last hour he could not believe it. VERY well-acted and directed and interesting, but they did NOT tak eit far enough IMO

I think it is disgusting and a low blow to make a movie and sensationalize on painful truths that NOBODY is doing anything about EXCEPT making money off it.

I'm all for outing the truth.

Lets get out some truth MOVIEGOERS.

The whole thing just pisses me off.

It is an example of what is wrong on this planet.

I watched it in NY and then hung out in the ambassador district while they all shopped.

Along with Condi>

GEEEZ.. You got me going.

Most people are pretty naive when it comes to the nefarious secret doings of Big Pharma. Even Le Carre has said that his fiction in Constant Gardener is a pale imitation of reality.

Anyone who has looked into vaccination big time with an open mind will realise that Big Pharma is experimenting all the time on Third World peoples, and often dumps drugs it can't use in the West onto them.

Not only that, but it is highly likely they have introduced and spread many diseases to places like Africa. This includes AIDS. I know this sounds shocking and unbelievable, but there is evidence because the polio shots they were doing there in the 60s had monkey viruses in them that are known to deplete the immune-systems of humans, and are structurally very similar to HIV viruses.

Apart from that WHO medical personnel routinely were vaxing poor africans right up to the 80s with unsterile needles. People would queue up and be injected with the same needle over and over again. This would have spread AIDS, chronic hepatitis, TB, Syphilis and who knows what else.

It is shocking how they have got away with that.
