As a gift I was thinking about dyeing some unbleached prefolds for a friend of mine. I was just wondering if anybody knows of dyes that would be ok to use on prefolds? I don't want to get anything that might be potentially irritating or toxic. I've always used Rit Dyes but not sure if they're ok.

rit will wash right out. If you're just dying one colour (as opposed to tie dying) you can either use the Dharma dyes or you can use Dylon COLD dye (has to be the cold stuff. You'll need the cold dye fix stuff too...) as a cheaper option. But the colours don't come out very dark if you tye dye with Dylon Cold so if you're tie dying, I'd go for the Dharma ones.

I tye-dyed my own pfs just with a Rainbow Rock tye-dye kit that I got on sale at Micheals. After searching this board a lot, I decided that the kits would be OK and, although more expensive if I was dying a lot, perfect for trying to dye a couple of shirts and dz pfs. From what I learned the most important thing was using fiber reactive dyes and making sure that I did what I was supposed to do to set the dye for the type of dye I was using and my fabric. did that make any sense? I was very happy with the vibrancy of the dyes and I haven't had any running problems.

the PP is right. You need fibre reactive, which is what is in the kits. Dylon cold are also fibre reactive but alas, all fibre reactive is not created equal... the dylon cold dyes will not give you the vibrancy as the tye dye kits or the dharma.
Rainbow Rock dyes are all fibre reactive as are the Dharma ones. Anything labled Procion will be great as well, or the dylon cold which work better if you are doing all one colour.
Be aware that you need to put LOTS of dye on the pf. I didn't put enough on mine the first time and ended up having more white space than I wanted. (I used a kit too really, I'm not importing dye from the US from Dharma... someone gave me a Canadian link but I had already used the kit)
