Ugh horrible heartburn time :(

When Im not pregnant I never get heartburn, I didnt even know what it was the first time I was preg. Its finally hit in this pregnancy & its been BAD I have actually had nausea with it too. Oh & I dread taking tums too...I hate the chalky taste. Ive even bought the ones that are not supposed to be chalky & those were worse.

Anyone else feeling the burn?

Yup, I have it, although it seems to have gotten a bit better. I take Tums with every meal and sometimes in between. I get the fruity ones, I don't mind them so much.

My mw recommended papaya enzyme, which comes in little sweet chewable pills that you can get at the health food store. You take 2-4 right after a meal, and it's worked pretty well for me for the past 3 or so weeks...

I haven't tried the paypaya yet. Almonds help some, but don't totally relieve it. I'm okay until late afternoon and then it hits and sticks around until after bedtime.

I've been taking Maalox...it works better and tastes better IMO than Tums and Rolaids (and doesn't give you that unquenchable thirst). My midwife says Gaviscon is even better. The only thing is, it only works for a short period of time...I take it just before I go to sleep (so I can actually go to sleep).

Last time, my midwife prescribed a daily pill...I don't remember what it was, but most of the heartburn/GERD treatments are considered quite safe. I wasn't keen on taking it, but it helped so much that I took it the final 3 or 4 weeks of my pg.

I'm having terrible heartburn, too.

My mw reccomended papaya enzyme if you end up taking stuff daily for heartburn because the massive amounts of calcium in Tums can lead to placenta problems.

hmm, i'll have to try that papya enzyme. i'm eating tums constantly it seems like. yuck.

I had some pretty bad heartburn when I was moving and working night shifts- but it was mostly stress related I think, because it's way milder and less frequent now.

What helped for me was my before bed heartburn preventing snack:
Plain yogurt (something good with lots of active cultures), with sliced papaya and some almonds crushed in. A little bit of a few natural remedies, I figure, and it seemed to help

yes..its terrible, horrible.. no good very bad! i find the papaya enzymes help as well, most of the time, but ive had a few exceptional times when nothing but time helped. i think for me it has a lot to do with babies position. ive heard that when baby is head up it can cause more heartburn and ive noticed that for myself. certain foods also contribute. i dont eat much fried foods, but things like tomato pasta sauce are a trigger for me..and chocolate, sadly. i try not to do too much bending over and things that squeeze my belly and stomach, because i tend to get heartburn from that as well.. ive also heard that stress can really affect the stomach, and cause heartburn..

at least its something for most of us that only happens durring pregnancy. i cant imagine having heartburn all the time..

The fact that it's temporary is a good point MamaFern, and one I remind myself from time to time!

I'm having heartburn too--it's really my biggest complaint in this pregnancy and for that at least I'm grateful! I tried the pineapple and papaya enzymes and didn't feel like they helped me much. I take Tums occasionally but also don't want to end up with a kidney stone the size of a grapefruit! Part of my problem is that I tend to eat late anyway, and now "late" has a new meaning--seems like if I eat dinner even four hours before I lay down for bed, heartburn starts and dinner threatens a reappearance. I elevated the head of the bed about 6 inches, and that sort of helps too, as does sleeping on an inclined foam wedge pillow. I think what will REALLY cure me is having the baby though!

Someone actually recommended aloe vera juice, and I have tried it and it seems to be working.

Cold glass of milk

Hi ladies! I am have a terrible time will heart burn, too. My Doc said to take zantac. I think I did twice but hate that thought that my son is taking it with me. So I have just resorted to good ol milk. Milk is a base and it will give you almost instant relief if it is cold. I sip mine very slowly and it feels good. Also I will fall asleep sitting up and then when I wake up for my first bathroom break I'll adjust and my heartburn will be gone (there are somedays where nothing healps) I will try the papaya pills

The mixed berry tums actually aren't that bad! Good thing I bought a case at Cosco :LOL

I'm impressed with the papaya enzymes. I got some last night and took them and no heartburn. I was amazed.

How much and how often can you take them? I think 4 after dinner will have me set, but I was wondering if more were okay if I needed them (sometimes I have late afternoon heartburn too).

Ugh, it's horrible! I can feel the acid right up into my ears, it seems! Bedtime is bad, but it can be bad any time of day, no matter what I eat. Blech. I was like this last time, too, and as soon as DD was born, POOF...no more heartburn.

Ice cream works really well for me, unfortunately...:

Itis no fun at all!

I take chewable papaya enzyme instead of Tums. It works pretty well. A glass of cold milk helps too.
