All I do is research so now I need some reading for me! I love magical fantasy type stuff (Diana Gabaldon, J.K. Rowling, Marion Zimmer Bradley etc.) I'd love something historical-ish about witchcraft, folk-healers, herbalism. I'm most fond of Celtic tradition...It's always fun to learn a little as you read. I figured you ladies might have some good suggestions!

There is herbalism, magic, and healing in Eragon and Eldest - I love those books. Also His Dark Materials trilogy is quite good, particularly the first book.

Have you read Daughter of the Forest by Juliet ? I haven't actually read it yet, but it's up next on my TBR pile. It comes highly recommended and it seems to fit what you're looking for. It's a retelling of a Celtic legend and the first book in the Sevenwaters Trilogy.

The His Dark Materials series by Philip Pullman top my list of favourite books. Rich and beautifully written - you can lose yourself in them.

Wise Child by Monica Furlong was quite an easy, pleasing read. Definitely fits the witchcraft, folk-healers, herbalism category.

Loved: Wicked , Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series, Tam-LinI think by Pamela Dean-awesome , Mists of Avalon , The Armless Maiden , anything by Neil Gaimen, and there's a whole series edited by Ellen Datlow and Terri Windling that are re-tellings of faery tales. THey all have titles like Ruby Slippers, Golden Tears and Black Rose, White Thorn -you get the picture. They're very good, all compilations that my favorite authors turn up in. If I think of more I'll post them.

I didn't emphasize it enough-Tam-Lin is really incredible. It's a retelling of the scottish tale taking place on a college campus in Minnesota. I wasn't quite sure when I picked it up, but it's absolutely a favorite of mine. Very lush, very smart, and if you don't know the classic tale it's still a treasure. Not anywhere in the same vein, but I ADORE Still Life with Woodpecker !

Juliet Marillier's Sevenwaters trilogy, first book mentioned above, is really really good
