Some ??? Please help

I'm new to diaper making (haven't actually made any yet :LOL ) and very confused. Anyway, I've got a few questions.

1. Where do you buy your fabric?

2. What type of fabric should I use for a heavy/fast wetting toddler (almost 2) who is potty training?

3. What type of fabric should I use for a heavy wetting (sometimes medium) baby who has sometimes liquidy poop?

Thanks so much!

Hi Rachel

1. Where do you buy your fabric? I usually get it online... Diapershop.com or go to yahoo and look up groups you can sometimes get a great deal in a co-op..

2. What type of fabric should I use for a heavy/fast wetting toddler (almost 2) who is potty training? I would say maybe try hemp? Its very absorbant and you can use many layers

3. What type of fabric should I use for a heavy wetting (sometimes medium) baby who has sometimes liquidy poop? as long as the fit of the diaper is good I dont think it matters much about the fabric.. Good Luck

I use old towels for our soaker layer since it's more readily available than hemp.

online is the only place to find PUL. I too like diapershop. They're very friendly and can get fabric to me over the border without it costing an arm and a leg. That in itself is enough to qualify for sainthood IMO. There's a sticky at the top of the diaper making section that can help you source material. I also buy from Wazoodle but you have to really know what you want from them. Get samples of things you are thinking about there before you buy large quantities since their descriptions are a bit lacking IMHO.

We like a fleece liner for the liquidy BF poos. Liquid goes through, solids stay on top and it's a fairly grabby fabric so it doesn't leak much (unless we put the diaper on wrong and then it's our fault...!)

1. Where do you buy your fabric?

PUL online - I've used the Diaper Shop and A Cut Above Fabrics and was happy with both (A Cut Above has prints.) I also got 2 yards off Ebay, but that is a buyer beware kind of place to shop for fabric I think

Hemp/sherpa - I've gotten from above and sewshoppe.com (who got it to me practically next day since I ordered it late at night!)

2. What type of fabric should I use for a heavy/fast wetting toddler (almost 2) who is potty training?

I'd do a combination of microfiber (which absorbs quicker) and hemp (which holds more)

3. What type of fabric should I use for a heavy wetting (sometimes medium) baby who has sometimes liquidy poop?

Fleece. In our world, fleece contains all those icky poops!

Thanks for the info. I'm going to check all those things out. I've been making practice diapers all weekend and it looks like I'm going to have to work on my technique a little more before I can actually expect to put one of my diapers on one of the kids and expect it to hold. I'm going to go ahead and order my materials though because I think it'd be better if I learned to make the dipes with the kind of stuff I'm going to use. All the choices are kind of making me but you guys have helped. Thanks again!

Be prepared for your first diaper with PUL to be a bit wonky. It can try the patience of the best of us!

In no time though, your diapers are going to look great (and if you're like me... then you'll have a few too many... :... my sewing desire exceeds my dd's need for diapers)
