Some Tea Tree Oil Questions

I love Tea Tree Oil and use it in my laundry, diaper pail, and home-made cleaning solution. I always rave to DH about how it is NATURAL and better than Lysol, etc. But, how do I KNOW? Are they any studies? I was wondering if there is any data out there on HOW it disenfects? Also, HOW LONG do you have to leave a solution of TTO and water on, say, a child's toy, in order to get the germs off? And, is TTO non-toxic? What would happen if DD drank some? Or licked a toy that had just been cleaned with it?

as far as how safe it is for the kids. I assumed that as soon as it was dry it was ok, but then they use it in mouthwash, so...
