Susan--I had my appt Thurs and advocated for bfing--I had done a lot of research and found little, but enough to bolster my case. RE started out saying "definitely wean" but ten mins later said as long as we knew it MAY affect the implantation of embryo, he was okay w/it.
I will not wean DD for this crap, no way. and I really wanted to be honest w/RE about it.
I searched Pubmed, LLL, Kellymom, BFing/lactation texts. Here's what I learned: There are three stages PP moms go through--no ovulation (usually at least 6 mos if menses stopped and EBFing). Then a transition period where there are menses, but usually irregular, irreg CM changes. This is when ovulation is occurring but often there is an irregular luteal phase. This is when the combination of elevated prolactin and interrupted gonadotropin (from suckling) can interfere w/implantation of embryo and/or low progesterone that will not sustain new pregnancy. THEN the third phase is where bfing continues long enough for it not to affect fertility at all. The texts say "rarely" a women will be affected by BFing not to have preggo success until totally weaned.
I offered to have prolactin level checked, he agreed. I will have results Tues.
Feel free to PM me. It's a really heartbreaking choice to be told you have to make--nurse your child or prematurely wean her for shot at another one.
