Resurfacing night-time fitteds: is it worthwhile? And do I use velour or fleece?

Hi there, I have only a handful of night-time diapers that work well, but since they are starting to get pinholes in the hemp, I am thinking about how to make them last longer. This is my last child and so I am more motivated to fixing up the existing diapers than buying. I am wondering if I can cover them in a layer of fleece or velour or something. Has anyone tried this and was it a PITA to do?

And which is better, fleece or velour? I have always used fleece next to the skin, but suddenly I am wondering if velour would be nicer on the skin, or easier to handle, or any other good things about it. (I have also used suedecloth but for some illogical reason it feels icky and plasticky to me.)

And one last question, if you are still with me, why is it so hard to find microfleece prints??

TIA!!

Well do you have a serger? And JoAnn's has a good selection of microfleece prints.

I do have a serger. Unfortunately it is hard for me to get to Joann's, it's quite a drive. So I was looking online last night, using the sticky here for fabric sources. I thought a print would be fun but I got quite confused with all the velour and double velour and low nap and single nap and microfleece terminology! Or was I just sleepy?!?

I was thinking that I can just place the fabric on the inside of the diaper, pin it, and buzz the edges with the serger. I am also going to use the internal soaker as a stuffer, so I will leave it open at the back to be the pocket. Will that work?

That totally sounds like it will work! Give it a go with some cheap material first to see how everything is going to look when you're doing the real deal (just in case you find some unexpected snags...)

since you don't have to finish cut fleece ends I think it would be really easy.

I hope you find the prints you're looking for!

OK, just reporting back, I got my chance to do one this evening.

I pinned an old velour shirt to the diaper and went around the edge with the serger. I wish I was a better serger artist but it was easy to do except for the sharp turns. The only other minor pitfall is the snaps, which I had forgotten about! I had to make 4 tiny cuts in the velour to accommodate them.

I am really happy with the cost/effort/benefit of this project, the diaper looks so much better. I am planning to get some fleece to do more inners, and also wondering how to put a cotton print on the outside - would I be able to do both with one giant serge?!?

Thanks for your support, it's so nice to feel I am not alone!

i'm glad it turned out the way you hoped it would!

if this were my project, i would use a glue stick to hold all the layers in place for serging. any glue stick will do as long as it is washable, i use the kind they sell at the beginning of the school year in packs of 4 for $1.00 at walgreens.
