Any advice on making your own pads?

Just what I need... one more thing to do before the baby arrives next month!! But I was reading the thread on the Keeper and it sounds like a real winner. I can't wait to try it out. As for postpartum, I would like to have a supply of pads (heavy duty of course). I read that someone made some out of flannel?? Can you use just plain ol' flannel or does it have to be some special kind? And would you just sew several layers in the shape of a pad? Would it stay in place? I would love to hear from anyone who has had experience doing this or maybe has some Gladrags and could give me any ideas (I've never seen a Gladrag up close). Thanks!

I used two layers of terry cloth for the center and flannel (old sheet) for the outside. But for postpartum you would probably want more core layers, unless you just use more than one pad at a time.

I don't have a slippage problem. They are really soft. I made them different widths and lengths for heavier and lighter days.

Do you need a waterproof layer? I've been sewing some, but haven't had a period yet so I'm not sure if they'll work. On some of mine I cut old diaper wraps and sewed that inside. The layers were, from bottom to top: flannel, diaper wrap, terry, flannel. I was thinking of replacing the diaper wrap with fleece. It would offer protection, wouldn't it?

Here's a few links I've found: http://www.borntolove.com/frugal-clothing.html
