Baby has painful gas

I'm trying to be mindful of what I eat and have been staying away from gassy foods. But, it never fails...After every feeding Meilana will be calm for a bit, might even fall asleep, and wakes up with the most painful gas. I can see it in her little face. She looks like she's in so much pain and does that cry where it takes a few second for her to inhale. The only thing that has helped so far is nursing her again. She seems to relax enough at that point, and that's when I feel the fireworks go off in her diaper. :LOL

I have no problem nursing her, but does anyone else have any sugg? The Dr. recommended Mylicon, but I'm not sure what's in that. I've tried patting her over my shoulder, rubbing har tummy, but nothing seems to help. Maybe I'm not burping her good enough after feedings? I just hate to see her in all that pain!

I know I'm responding to myself, but thought I'd mention that we just had explosive poo! I'm talking out of the diaper, out of the onesie, and onto mommy's shirt! Maybe this was her problem last night?

She just seems to have such a sensitive tummy.

My first son was a lil gas machine and I swear by mylicon. I wouls give him a small dose (first line) before every feeding and no more painful gas it was a life saver ........ or shall I say sleep saver :LOL the body dosen't even absorb simithicone so even if baby drank the whole bottle there would be no problems. I know this beacause ds#1 drank a whole bottle when he was 3 called poison control they said all is good.

More support for gripe water - a herbal remedy that seems to give our August some peace.

Can I get that at the health food store, or will they have it at the supermarket in the pharmacy/herbs section? I've never heard of it before.

When I went to Life Grocery (a whole foods store) they had gripe water there too...you'll probably have to do a whole foods place because I haven't seen gripe water anywhere but there.

we got gripe water at the drugstore. it is a mainstream thing even though it is herbal. i have tried both the drops and the water but we still have a problem with gas. maybe i am not being proactive enuf and need to use a bit with all feedings! i feel so bad giving him stuff BUT the gas wakes him all the time!

he was crying last night so i turned him on his tummy and he would wake and toot and i would rub his back and he would go back to sleep. i was face to face with him and we were both waking frequently so i figured the SIDS risks was pretty minimal. it's his only thing but is is so sad to see him cry in pain and start screaming and then swallow more air! i guess i am not burping good enuf either. he hates it. arches his back, screams and tries to throw himself backwards to get back to the boob!

anyway, i hear ya curlyfry and i wonder, is this normal or does my baby have excessive gas and why?? better yet, if it is normal which i suspect when will it pass????????

My DS had lots of problems with gas. He had to be burped every 5 minutes or he would projectile vomit. I also had overproduction which resulted in hindmilk foremilk imbalance which I think gave DS an achey belly. So once letdown happened I would pop DS off and let the watery foremilk run out into a diaper before I put him back on. I forget where I read about the hindmilk/foremilk issue. Nursing Mother's Companion???? www.kellymom.com?

We also did the gas drops. I don't know if they did anything to help in our situation, but I figured they didn't hurt.

One thing that did help was carrying DS upright in the baby bjorn. He did not tolerate the sling well. When he was really fussy we would bjorn him outside. We sometimes spent hours bjorning him. Also, it was best if we didn't rest our hands on the bjorn. The jostling of us walking without our hands on him seemed to soothe him.

Good luck with figuring it out--I know it's really hard when your little one is hurting.

Put baby on her back and bicycle her legs - fold her knees to her belly - forces the gas out. Do the i love you tummy rub. Mylicon is great too. Ditto the foremilk - stay on one breast for 2 feedings in a row.

I just tried Mylicon for the first time...I'll keep you posted...*fingers crossed*

Thanks for all the suggestions mamas!!! It's nice to know there are a few other things I can try if this doesn't work...

yipee, we seem to be having some success with mylicon with most every feed. the bottles says not more than 6 doses a day so i am trying to spread them out a bit but we had a great night last night and he seems calmer. i mean he still has gas but it seem to not bother him so much. before when i tried it i was just giving him a little bit 2X per day and that just doesnt cut it i guess. i do feel kinda weird giving him so much but i hope it is just temporary. he seems to have adapted to swallowing the stuff and doesnt protest!!!

how's things going with your babe curlyfry??

Oh good...glad your babe is feeling better!

Mylicon is working for us too! I've used the lowest dose for most feedings today and she seems so happy! Just a little gas, but with one push she gets it out now, instead of screaming like she was yesterday. (btw, my bottle says no more than 12 doses a day) She spit it out the first couple of times, but now I just give it to her right b4 she eats and stick her right on the boob. :LOL Now she swallows it.

I feel a little bad about having to give her something too, but it works! I'm going to try the gripe water too...

Thanx so much mamas! Meilana thanks you too!!

For a different perspective, check out this article:http://www.mothering.com/articles/ne...onnection.html

It's helped me with dd's crying, and then when it got too bad, I bounced on the exersize ball. I have also cut out dairy completely (in addition to unconsolable crying, she has a little rash).

It can be gas, but also other things... for our sweetie it was dairy, allowing her to cry in arms, and a bad nursing habit we are working on (sucks for four min, falls asleep, feeds every hour! -- thank goddess for the bouncy ball -- and I get exersize, too -- plus it feels good on my sore perineum).
