New York Times readers?

I don't live in New York but I have been an avid NY Times reader for nearly five years now.

I appreciate their reporting - both national and international as well as their coverage of the arts. I especially look forward to Bob Herbert's Saturday columns (did anyone catch today's on Trent Lott?) and have learned to appreciate the wit of Maureen Dowd.

Anybody else?

If yes, why? What do you like about it that you don't get from your local?

Do you read on line or does it arrive at the doorstep?

I love the NYT, but I have gone to reading it online. We live in DC and DH insists on getting the Washington Post as well (it has funnies : ),and the amount of paper was becoming overwhelming. It's also not cheap. I find I read almost as much of the paper online as I did on paper, if not more.

I love Tues. - Science Times and Wed. - Dining In/Out. I also love the op-ed page and the Sunday magazine.

You're right about the special daily sections - the Science pages, Dining In/Out -- and yes, Escapes too! - they're wonderful. I read about things that I am not really interested in -- like, say, that weekly cocktail/mixed drink column. I don't know why but I read it. I guess the writing is that good, huh? And the doctors who contribute to the case studies column -- just great.

I've also enjoyed following the integration of the same sex commitment couples into the wedding annoucements in the Sunday social pages.

And you're right, the Sunday magazine is the best.

And the op-ed -- a must read for a political junkie like me.

I'll have to try the Washington Post online...

I used to get the Washington Post, but haven't in a few years. I still read articles from it from time to time as I find a friend sends me links to many there. I also read articles from the NYT upon occasion. I enjoy buying NYT, but the Sunday editions are quite pricey, so I rarely do that.

I always enjoyed the Style Invitational in the WP Sunday section.

The Reno Gazette-Journal just really isn't as good.

I've read the NYT for many years, and have had it delivered to my house since last summer. Our local paper really stinks. The only worthwhile part is the local sports coverage.

I really enjoy the Paul Krugman articles on the Op-Ed page.

They even published my letter in the Circuits section, a few weeks ago.

The NYT and the Village Voice are the only papers I read lately. The NYT's sensibility just makes SENSE to me, but I'm biased--I lived there for 15 years.

I like the Sunday Magazine! The crossword is soooo hard! Arts and Entertainment Too. The Voice is an awesome paper!!!

I read the NYT--I live in NYC so a lot of it is pertinent to me. I vaccillate between appreciating the coverage and being annoyed sometimes at the know-it-all tone of some its writers. Depends. I mostly read the Sunday paper and don't read it daily. I confess that the sections I turn to first and read with regularity are the fluffier ones, like the Style section (always read the wedding story), and the City section. And I always attempt the puzzle, sometimes I get somewhere, usually not far. I am sorry to say that other than the New Yorker, and the Nation on line occasionally, that's about all I read. I used to read quite a lot of newspapers but just don't have the energy since becoming a mother and also am burned out on how horrific the news usually is. And I don't watch much news TV.

BTW did any of you read the article in last sunday's NYT mag about AIDS orphans in Africa? DON'T Read if you are in anywhere near a weepy mood and you don't want to cry.

I just read that online in bed last night nursing ds.....bawling my eyes out quietly so as not to wake up dh. Oh. My. God. Made me want to fly over and adopt an orphan. It's so easy to become inured to the overwhelming numbers of AIDS deaths, and then you read the stories of the individual children left behind, and it's just heartwrenching.

Anyone have a favorite AIDS orphans charity to donate to?

How about today's Bob Herbert column on Frist and the GOP in general? Apparently Frist is bad enough but the guy who is replacing him as chairman of the senatorial cmte. is even worse: George Allen who, as Governor of Virginia a few years ago declared April "Confederate History and Heritage" month and who displayed a confederate flag on the wall of his living room. Herbert's point is that the GOP still courts the racist votes with guys like these because they need it...

Articles like this one make me keep my subscription...I guess I'd rather spend my $$ on this than cutting my hair...it's true. I haven't cut my hair since I got pregnant (superstitious) and how old is the little guy now? Nearly eight months.

I LOVE reading the swanky wedding annoucements of the uber rich! I also love the magazine section... great, inceridbly well written in-depth articles. I am crossword junkie, so I like the daily crosswords. I can do Monday, Tuesday and sometimes Wednesday's puzzles. My goal in life is to be able to do Saturday and Sunday's.

The Sunday NYT is the only paper I read these days...it usually takes me a week to read it

I also love the wedding section and the Sunday magazine. I love the "Week in Review" section of editorials - I feel like I catch up on so much news there. I even read the business and money sections sometimes

I read the NYT online, as the local paper's pretty scary (what's even scarier, though, is the fact that even colleagues at the univ. are surprised that I don't turn to the local rag for (anything but the local) news). Have you noticed, though, that the NYT has become more conservative in the past few years? Or maybe it's just me. I find myself increasingly turning to the Washington Post online, as a result, as well as several foreign papers.

Nothing beats the NYT's food section, though!

I used to read the Baltimore Sun (for local stuff and the weekend section) the washington post and the wall street journal. In paper. I can't keep up anymore and I am drowning in hige piles waiting to be sorted and some read. I think I need to drop some!
