My body's new reation to wheat.

Hopefully someone has had a similar experience and can offer some advice

Here the situation. I have been of a very restrictive diet for about 5 months due to my dd2 and her reactions to food that I eat. I cut out wheat , dairy, all the plants in the nightshade family, and peanuts. I have been very wary of trying new things until she was older because of the intense crying spells these foods seem to generate. Well I have just put wheat back into my diet and she seems to be just fine with it. Now the only problem is.........I get terrible gas
I know I know TMI!! It isn't painful, it just really really stinks! So much so that my oldest dd asked if I could stop eating wheat because I am smelling up the apartment

My question is what to do? Does this mean I shouldn't have wheat again!!! Or will it get better with time and lots of air fresheners???

My real fear has always been that I will turn into my mother who is the queen of "the funky green mist" whenever you enter a room. Is there some way to get myself back in balance?

Sorry! I think wheat is pretty hard to digest for anyone.

When we went on our low carb diets, I was able to reintroduce it for myself, but my dh to this day has issues. It gives him terrible gas, but at least I dont have to smell it!

Hm. It could be that your intestines stopped producing whatever enzymes they need to digest the wheat, since it wasn't being asked of them. I would maybe just keep eating it in small amounts and see if it gradually gets better. I don't know if Beano would help in this situation - it is basically digestive enzymes, right? Might be worth a try.

Also, I wonder if probiotics would help you with this problem? Those little helpful bacteria do help break foods down for us and make them more absorbable.

Gas is no fun!

Whole grains contain phytates... which inhibit digestive enzymes. Everyone has a hard time digesting them and they are not healthy unless soaked or sprouted to remove the phytates.

I suspect that the current nutritional fad of processed whole grain everything will lead to more and more stories like this. Also phytates bind to minerals, which means they take minerals from your diet and prevents your body from using them, quite dangerous for someone on a limited diet already.

Probiotics will definately help. As will eliminating sugar. Your digestion needs some healing mama, your story sounds just like mine. Come hang out in the Gut Healing Tribe.

Oh and digestive enzymes will help heal the gut, more info here:

But Beano is specifically for the sugar molecules in beans. A broad spectrum enzyme supplement would be better to try.
