Runny nose=dairy allergy? Please advise

I recently started feeding my 12 month old yogurt and cheese...and milk when it's cooked into things like oatmeal.

But, whenever she eats dairy her nose begins to run and runs continually for several hours. My pedi suggested I just feed it to her anyway?!?! But, I don't think that can possibly be healthy for her...

On the other hand, yogurt and grilled cheese sandwiches are foods that she absolutely LOVES!

Has anyone had any experience with something like this? What would you suggest? TIA!

sounds like an allergic type response, runny nose is abig sign. Usually we do love the foods that we are allergic too. I would definitley cut out the dairy, perhaps try some raw dairy and see what happens, or what a few months. Ped's are notoriously uneducated on the subject of allergies there are many ways to get her good nutrition which involve no dairy.

My DD had a runny nose for 2 months...I finally decided to cut out dairy and on the 4th full day, her nose stopped and has not run since. She drinks rice or almond milk and eats soy yogurt..Roads End Organics makes a powdered dairy free cheese substitute that you add water to and can use on pizza or to make grilled cheese (or other ways) I bought some but I haven't tried it yet...

I'd suggest keeping a food diary, but trying to stay away from dairy- so for instance, start with rice milk in the oatmeal, things like that. Yoghurt and cheese sandwiches are easier to substitute, and you'd just need to do 6 weeks without to confirm whether it is the cows milk in her diet causing the runny nose or something else.
Your doctor's probably approaching this from the angle that a food intolerance will do less damage than an imbalanced diet- which may be true for someone who doesn't know how to get calcium and vitamin D for other sources, but is a massive generalisation.

a lot of children are allergic to dairy and its products.. my sister daughter too thros up after taking milk.. so milk has been stopped and she loves yoghurt.. so we give her that.. may be you can stop it for a while and give its variation like yoghurt, cream cheese or white butter.. there is absolutelt no necessary to have milk.. she can take supplements too.

Yeah, runny nose (without a cold) usually means an allergy to something and very often to dairy. There are a lot of dairy-free substitutes from cheese to milks (I personally love rice milk) and yoghurts. And it may be a sensitivity that she'll grow out of. My sister was allergic to dairy when she was young, but by the time she was 6ish it no longer bothered her.

Yes! My son gets this. Took me a while to figure out because he only gets it after the dairy had built up in his system.

If you have a good health food nearby it shouldn't be hard to find some good substitutes. Its take us a while, but I have found some that I'm really happy with.

I've cut it out of her meals at home as much as I can. Bought some veggie cheese slices and soy yogurt and almond milk, etc.

I've read that most dairy allergies in children fade away at around 2. Is this only if they are not exposed to it? Do I need to be vigilant about letting her try my mashed potatoes at a restaurant, etc. She doesn't get sick, just a runny nose. But I don't want to exacerbate the problem. So I guess I'm asking if a little dairy every now and then is ok...
