You said something somewhere about loosing teeth and reading readyness going hand and hand. Tell me more !

Madeline has been able to read for a while but really plateaued (yeah, I know that can't be spelled right) all of a sudden she has been reading everything. No word is too challenging. Two days ago we noticed she has two loose teeth (finally - she was beginning to think it would never happen). Coinsedence or not ?

I know that in Waldorf circles the losing of the first tooth is a huge deal. There is a lot of thinking regarding this as a sign of the child "coming into their own" in a spiritual/body sense, ie. becoming more grounded in the physical sense.

Waldorf does not introduce reading until around second grade, about the time most children have lost a tooth, or two.

Personally, I know too many 3 and 4 year olds who read fluently without any pressure from the parents to think the tooth thing is accurate in every case. I think reading is very much connected to good eye control and neurological maturity. Some children do everything early--walk, talk, and read while others do not, and I think this is mostly do to their own neurological development, and not a sign of spiritual or psychological growth.

Hey chick! Yep it's the Waldorf concept. There was a thread about it before ~ the moms who responded first called BS on me, then looked back and realized that when the sound blending and excitement about independent reading *really* came at tooth loosing time Is it 100% accurate? heck no! nothing about kids ever is! But it sure is a good gauge. Hannah is sooooo bummed, no loose teeth yet! But, she does have a natural desire to figure things out and the desire for reading is developing on its own and I'm so proud! It's nice, too, because she knows the *pressure's off* as long as she has all her teeth ~ as soon as one wiggles Hayden will be following her around waiting for her to read!! :LOL

Edited to add: check out Waldorf for Homeschoolers It's got lots of info on the *whys* behind waiting to read til 7. There's also a great quote that describes Einstein not reading nor writing til 14 ~ he was too busy doing other things.
