Has anyone had to turn on the furnace yet? - Page 3

We turned ours on yesterday - it is electric forced air. We have a woodstove, but in previous winters we have discovered that we can burn an awful lot of wood before the temperature stays below freezing, so we tend to use the furnace until we hit the freezing mark and then switch to wood. We figure it is cheaper to use the furnace to heat air that is cold but not super cold than it is to use it to heat when the temp hits -20*C (we are Canadian.) The first year we had the woodstove we used it exclusively - and ran out of wood in mid February and had to use the furnace through a couple of nasty winter storms. :

I am going to purchase a programmable thermostat today. I have the furnace set to about 62F but I did just turn it up so the house won't be so chilly when the kids get up, then I will turn it back down. Everyone is fighting colds and I wish the temperature would just drop so we can light the stove! I went to bed wearing a wool sweater last night.

We had to turn on ours on Sunday because we were having friends with three babies come over and it was 61 in our house. I am keeping the thermostat set at 64-65, and so far it's been between 64 and 70 in the house. I had hoped to make it to November 1st, and I might have made it if it weren't so damp.

Namaste!

We just gave in. It was 52 degrees in the house and my nose was running and I thought "This all makes no sense if I get sick and then have to go into labour with the flu." So, the heat is on to bring it up to at least 65.

Crud. Snow.

While we didn't have snow, it was really cold here, with bitter Wilma wind. I was trying to hold off until Nov, but it was too much. I kept in on for an hour to take off the chill.

I am hoping to keep it off ...

Ours went on a couple days ago. My mom was totally hassling me about it -- the baby's nose was cold, etc. But I finally got really chilled and gave in -- have it at 65. It's been raining for days -- I think if it were dry it wouldn't feel so cold in here.

High temp of 43 today and it's been raining forever - but I refuse to turn on the heat! Refuse I say!

I turned the heat (we have forced hot air/gas heat) on days two weeks ago. I figured if my husband can have air conditioning on in September then I can have heat on in October. There is nothing worse than being cold! I'd rather eat mac and cheese every day then be cold.

We have a programmable thermostat so heat goes on to 68F at 5:30am then goes back down to 66F at 8am once kids go off to school. Baby and I are in and out all day and so far this has been fine. Once it gets really cold out I'll leave it at 68 when I am home more.

Wow, I feel like a wimp after reading this thread! I was going to wait until Nov. 1st, but I broke down and turned it on Monday. We're in KS, so it's really not THAT cold, but when we got up it was 58 in the house and everyone was grouchy and the baby had a fever, so I turned the furnace on. I have it set at 65 during the day, 60 at night. Our weather is supposed to be warm for the rest of the week, so hopefully we won't have to run it again this month.

We turned it on briefly to take chill off...Wilma rain for days!
I have plugged the little electric space heater thingy in as dd and I are basically in one room during the day. Keeps down at her level warmer, blessings to the mdc mama that swapped me slippers so her feet are toasty too!!

Highs in the 40's, lows in the 20's...I turn it down during the day as I can take it (and know how to bundle myself and the babe up!), and at night I turn it down to 60. But in the evenings, DH has it on. Thankfully, I've been able to get him to keep it around 68 and not 78 like he'd like (longing for our old apartment where the heat was PAID FOR!)
