Fetal movements-spastic? Also breathing practice.

I was wondering about spastic fetal movements. This baby seems to do a lot of them. Way more than dd did. The baby is still doing them and I am 37 weeks. Kind of worries me. In my first pregnancy, dd seemed to do a lot of one shot karate kicks and chops, then later slow rolling movements, I called it baby tai chi. :LOL She did lots of cervix punches too of course. But nothing like all these rabbity spastic movements.

This time I have gestational diabetes--could that have anything to do with it? I'm just worried about possible neurological problems or ???

I was also wondering about babies who seem to do lots of fetal breathing practice. This baby has been doing it many times a day for the last 2 to 3 weeks. I mean, she does it ALOT. Could it just be her position that makes me notice it more? Is there any certain position that would make it more noticeable?

What do you mean by "spastic"...jumpy movements? This baby has had hiccups a lot...more than any of the others(well maybe my first but that was 15 years ago)

This is my 4th baby and the first time I have noticed the breathing movements...very cool...I am sure it has to do with position.

I didn't know you could notice baby breathing movements, but this is my first, and I'm two weeks away from my due date, and he is more active now than he has ever been. He pokes and kicks and sometimes does these dramatic sweeps from one side of my belly to the other, several times in one hour, and my belly button will move with it, a few inches to the left, a few inches to the right. Nothing like the pictures I see in magazines with the perfect round bellies! Sometimes I just sit there and watch my belly contort for 20 minute stretches. It's my favorite show.

Hmm, I mean like there's a little rabbit in there, you know how rabbits will do that spastic moving sometimes?

Yeah, the breathing thing is weird......some people are surprised when I mention it because they never felt it. Do you know what position your baby is in? I don't know all the terminology, maybe I'll come back and let you know when I figure out the right terms for where mine is.

Me, too!

This is my 5th pregnancy and I've felt all sorts of stuff w/ various pregnancies. I know the kind of movements you mean...almost like s/he has the shivers at times, and like seizures or something other times. I think it's all completely normal. I really worried through one pregnancy (I think it was my first son?) that he was having some sort of seizure activitiy in there. Of course, he wasn't, it was just that he was a VERY busy baby. He wasn't any bigger or smaller and I didn't have GD, so that wasn't a factor. I know I also felt those movements w/ my 2nd son (now turning two) and I feel them a lot w/ this baby. The only reason I don't remember if I felt it w/ the first two (girls) is because it was a long time and a few pregnancies ago and I get confused.

Try not to worry, mama.

love, Penelope

My baby has also been doing a lot of spastic movements...they kind of worry me sometimes because it's like he/she is having a seizure or something....very odd feeling. I've also noticed a lot of practice breathing with this baby and not with my first two. It is the COOLEST thing. I think it has to do with the way the baby is positioned. I know it's not hiccups, that's a much different sensation. With the practice breathing you can actually see the area on my belly where the baby is, move up and down, up and down. Very cool to see.

Yeah, it's definitely not the same as hiccups! First baby (dd) had them several times a day. This one had them couple times a day for a while, but the last few weeks have been all about the breathing practice.

Sometimes it happens after she has been startled by a loud noise. Hmm. It's all so weird what goes on in there. lol

Penelope, thanks for the reassurance! I guess it's good to know I don't have the only "spaz", lol.

This is exactly how I described my son's movements this morning! Actually, I think I used the term "jackrabbit", though. He is really active alot of the time, but he'll give me that spastic rabbit movement on occassion, like around midnight last night. I just watched the entire left side of my stomach move very quickly in and out...weird! I know from an U/S last week that he's in a head down position and his butt is just above and to the right of my belly button most of the time. I haven't felt any practice breathing, just plenty of hiccups!

You know newborns do that "startle" thing, even when there's no real stimulus. Probably with late-term babies in utero, it's exactly the same thing--just in a smaller space.

As for the breathing practice--so THAT's what that was! My first child would do that and I had no idea what was going on! Thanks!

omg, that's neat, I noticed my belly moving up and down, up and down, the other day and wondered if it was caused by the baby's heart beat or something. Maybe it was breathing practice?
