too poor for cloth diapers - Page 3

before DD was born my late DH bought 5 dozen Sesame Street brand PF's at Kmart for $1 a dozen on clearence. (he bought them on a wim and intented to use them for rags for work if I didn't want them) they are just plain white prefolds similiar to the Gerber ones but much more absorbant. funny thing is I I have a pretty large diaper stash but use these constantly and they have turned out to work awesome. they aren't as thick as my ubcpf's but they dry super quick and work as doublers for my toddler as well as reg dipes for my infant. I would check around at your discount stores, you might find a deal like we did

some kind mamas already have given me some extras. . Tofumama gave me 3 soakers, an aio, two longies and 3 dozen prefolds and snappis for a great deal!

two soakers fit and the prefolds, though awesome, gave her a HORRIBLE diaper rash! she's enever even had diaper rash before. she cried a lot. I think i read using flannel liners wll help against that. im' about to look it up.

I ordered some really used fitteds to go under the soakers and I want to get a fleece liners and doublers and see how that works. then I will hopefully have enough to make it thru a 2 day period...

you MDC mamas and the mamas at diaperswappers.com have helped me a lot. i will never be able to properly show my gradiude to everyone that took me thru this step and step again. the whole thing was just so confusing with all of the options! too many options!!!

Laura

I'm still loving all of the advice, btw! keep it coming! (and donations!! haha)

i was going to mention miracledipes and apparently there is also a freeclothdiapers yahoo group as well.

as for myself i went with 2 dozen prefolds and 10 bummis whisper pants (about 100 bucks) - hes been in the whisper pants since 3 months and hes almost a year. the folding and the pants can be frustrating since hes all wiggly now but hey, im broke and cant afford to get all fuzzibunz (though i have picked up a few here and there from clothingdiapering community on live journal).

I'm assuming you don't sew? If you do, Check out fernandfaerie.com low cost diaper solutions. I love buying thrift store wool sweaters and turning them into covers.
Also try craigslist.com. You can check cities all over the country and just have stuff shipped to you.
If you have a sewing machine, you really can make your own diapers for next to no cost. T-shirts, wool sweaters, kitchen towels, etc. You really only need to buy notions: elastic, thread, velcro.

I was going to say, too, that I have used soakers in disposable diapers for traveling--ds is allergic to disposables. I wonder if making soakers (flannel, stretch terry, or old towels or washcloths) would be very hard. One mom I read about bought super cheap washcloths at WalMart in bulk and folded them into 3s for a soaker. Then washed them w/ the diapers.

Also, the above will work if part of your motivation is to not expose so much disp. diaper stuff to dd.

I have gotten some fuzzy bunz for cheap.anywhere from $2.00 for one to $15 for 2 at ebay. i prefer fuzzy bunz becuase they are easy for daycare but I have other brands...cuddle buns, one i can't remember, whisper wraps, one gerber wrap...liked that but dd outgrew it and never found more. i bought flannel prefolds/burp cloths and loved them. they were 3 for $6 and they work very well. I also bought cheap flannnel and cut it for flat diapers, very easy and cheap. I have become an addict but still able to be very frugal with my dipes, especially since I bought them used.

I will admit I have not read all three pages of this thread, and apologize ahead of time if this is a repeat.

Have you seen this website?
http://www.geocities.com/cyndiegran/diapertext2.html

It's called "how we diapered Brad for free" and has lots of helpful hints. You don't have to spend a fortune on diapers. I made some out of DH's worn out teeshirts and cotton longjohns that worked great. I bought used prefolds at the trading post here for barely more than shipping cost. I found a dozen diaper covers for 25 cents a piece at the thrift store!! And, with the money I saved (we had been spending $60-100 each month on disposable diapers and wipes because DD is so sensitive and we had to use a specific brand) I bought new diapers and still had some left over!

If you're in the DC area, then Modern Diaper Company (diaper service) sells their used prefolds for $.50 each I think.

PM me mama, your box is full. I have some stuff you might be able to use.

I didn't read through all the posts so sorry if I repeat... We didn't have the start up money either. I used cheap prefolds I had gotten as a baby shower gift for burp cloths, and a gerber ez wrap from babies r us. I slowly added used covers from diaper swaps.

I had a ton of flannel receiving blankets and I used those as flats in the origami fold for diapers for months. I used microfiber towels from walmart as boosters/doublers folded inside the pad part (don't want it to touch baby's skin).

Then I discovered recycled wool wraps - buy a wool sweater from the thrift store $2-4 here, and you can make 2 soakers and a pair of longies from each sweater. If you can crochet or knit, buy some wool yarn and do it that way.

I slowly added prefolds and have converted those to fitteds with aplix.

I've also found a lot of plastic pants and some better covers at the thrift store. 99% of my stash is used.

You could also put some things on layaway and pay a little at a time - a lot of diaper sites have layaway.

HTH a little...
