Its let down that is painful. You know what normal let down feels like, this is so strong it hurts. I only have pain during let down or when I am not wearing a bra (but I think thats just cause my boobs are so heavy lol). I thought about asking my midwife. would my breasts hurt all the time if I had thrush? Or just during let down?

curlyfry - when I had my first I didnt experience let down. LLL says that normal. I guess if she is gaining so much you don't really have to worry! my ds gained almost 2 pounds in 3 weeks as well. He was 10 lbs 4 oz at 3 weeks up from 8 lbs 8 oz at birth. He looks like a mini hulk cause he hasn't grown but .5 inch - just growing horizontally lol

Thanks for the feedback Amanda. He did it once while breast feeding but usually it's after. That you say it's fairly common makes me feel better. I've been wondering if I needed to worry about reflux... First baby paranoia probably.

Lisa - FWIW, I don't think I feel any signs of let down either.

Nolajen - I was gonna reply to you and forgot. Sorry #3 spit up milk through his nose all the time. It was so wierd! I had heard of it happening but when you see it first hand its alarming! He outgrew it in a few weeks thankfully, I don't think its too pleasent to have milk come out of your nose! It didn't come out his mouth at all just his nose. Mostly when he burped, occasionally when he nursed - like it was an overflow :LOL

I don't think I feel my letdown. Is this normal? When she first latches on, it's a bit painful, then the pain goes away. Is that the letdown? Never done this before, so I guess I'm just not sure what I'm supposed to be feeling. I"m never leaking and only feel engorged when I don't wear a bra. It's weird how much of a difference that makes. I'm wearing those tank tops to bed that have a built in shelf bra so that I don't get bricks on my chest!

I still hope she's getting enough. She's been a little fussy after feedings lately. I weighed her yesterday and she's 9.5 lbs. now. She was 7.5 lbs. at birth (3.5 wks ago) so I think that's a nice weight gain, right?
It is completely normal for you to not feel the letdown. Most women describe it as a pins and needles sensation throughout your entire breast. For some it can be quite painful - like a stabbing sensation.

I never felt letdown with my first daughter until she was 6 or 7 months old. This time around I feel it sometimes - but not consistently and usually only on the side that is not being used at the moment. ;-) But it's normal to feel it from the beginning and then not after a few months of nursing or vice versa or for it to come and go. It's unique to everyone.

Her weight gain is awesome! Go mommy milk!

With ds1 I didn't start feeling letdown until 3 or 4 months. With this one, I felt it as soon as my milk came in. For me, I can feel every duct contract almost painfully in a circle around my areola, and my nipple too. It is a sharp, pleasurable pain, a good pain. I enjoy it.

Sleep deprivation from night time nursing combined with early rising toddler is kicking my butt. MW suggested I wake her during the day to nurse more often.
DD wakes up and nurses just enough to trigger my let-down before passing out again. I wind up pumping my milk by the end of the day so I won't be too engorged for dd to get a latch when she finally decides it's time to wake up and nurse. She is extremely lethargic during the day. I have tried undressing her and talking to her, making the room bright...
Any suggestions on waking dd up? I'm getting a little dangerous with this sleep deprivation...
Although it is Friday and I should have a chance to rest this weekend, at least.

BennyPai - Take her outside a lot for the sunlight. That really helped with Miles in his first 2 weeks when he wouldn't wake to eat.

Thanks, Galatea!!! I will try this tomorrow.

I am loving this thread!

I've been MIA forever b/c we had a really rough start w/ nursing, and I had to really buckle down and invest a lot of my time into just nursing and pumping non-stop. Arlo is a laid back, sleepy kid, and he wasn't doing much work at the breast for the first 2 -3 weeks.

I think we are good now though. He's wetting up a storm, stooling (though not in the "4 -5 poo/day" textbook pattern), and best of all growing...and I'm not having to supplement! I'm really so proud. Nursing Eben long term didn't work out, though I did use the SNS for 4.5 months. I did not get good help from my LC, and thought I was unable to work up to a full supply.

But we did it! It's been a lot of work, and I do have to pump somewhat to maintain (at this point anyway), but we're finally relaxing into a groove where we can just nurse and enjoy it and I can see him growing and am not stressed out about whether or not he's getting enough.

I'm glad I popped back in here. I hope to be able to keep up w/ you all again now.

Keely!!! It's great to "see" you! Good for you for sticking with it and overcoming all of those nursing obstacles! You're amazing!!!

I have a painful let down this time also, it never hurt like this with ds. I really don't think it is thrush and it isn't too bad, just annoying and painful for a about 10 seconds. I don't leak at all this time either, which seems weird to me because I leaked like crazy with ds.

My guys are still nursing great. Miles is a better nurser than Byron, Byron is just a little lazy and smacks a lot but he is still doing good. They are gaining about 1 lb a week each now and were up to 11lb 6 oz and 11lb 1oz at 4 weeks (up from 8lb 2oz and 7lb 15oz). Miles has the fattest cheeks, it is so cute

Kate is still clicking something, she is also clidking while sucking my thumb...and it wasnt her tounge it was the roof of her mouth. Anyway, she was 10 lbs 10 oz at 4 weeks! And of course still loves to nurse I am so happy to have made the personal milestone of no bottles at 1 month. And she's almost 6 weeks old, so that will be a milestone of JUST breastmilk which I am also totally thrilled about!!

She is blisfully sleeping in her hotsling right now, she's nice and warm. OUr house is 66 degrees right now, and actually feels great. If only we could figure out nursing in this..and her being comfortable. I think maybe my boob is too big. I bought this when I was a C cup and now I am a D cup...but I haven't gone to check to see if the sizing is still the same.

I too am trying to figure out nursing in the hotsling. I did maneuver Arlo into a nursing position in the wrap, but you have to undo the whole wrap and redo it to switch sides, which is more hassle than it's worth. If I could just figure out how to nurse him in the pouch, it'd be super.

Anyone know anything WRT how beginning to exercise again may affect my supply. I *do not* want to injure my milk supply. I'm actually not even interested in losing any weight, but I'd like to start toning the flab, however, I'm content to stay jiggly 'til Arlo wants to wean if doing some light lifting and toning type stuff is going to put our milk at risk.

i was wondering the same thing..what kind and how much exercise puts us in jepoardy? i want to start taking walks with my little girl and once i get the dr's ok get back to running but not if it hurts my milk.
