short labours and big babies!

This board is very encouraging...the average baby weight so far is approx 8lbs 5oz...wow!

Most of the labours on this board have been less than 6 hours. I took out the two longest ones (over 24 hours) and the remaining averaged 5.5hrs.

Are we a big baby/short labour board? Is it because often many of us have early or prodromal labour but don't rush off to the hospital(maybe because we are having homebirths) so we don't get induced? I am thinking many women go in at 38 to 39 wks with prodromal labour and they are 2-3 cm dilated so dr. hooks them up and gives them pitocin...labour takes longer and baby weighs less.

Or maybe we eat a bit healthier we have bigger babies and shorter labours or maybe it's because we are more in tune and relaxed when babies come.

Perhaps it's just a combination of all of the above...and maybe this board is just a fluke.

Any thoughts...had anyone else noticed this?

Thanks

Carolyn

I noticed and I'm hoping the short labor trend continues!!! I don't think I've got an 8-pound baby here, but I'd loooooooooooooovvvvvvve to get him out of his current location as quickly as possible so we can see.

i had noticed this trend, too. very interesting, and very cool.

allgirls...you raise some very interesting questions! i wonder percentage wise how many of us here in the Oct. boards are having homebirths? and if this differs from other ddc's.

I'll be another one to ruin the short labor thing. I've been at the real labor since 2 a.m. and have hit an afternoon plateau...

Don't think it'll be 3 days this time, but I've definitely broken the 6 hour rule everyone else has had...

I can't believe how many on this board have had UC's on purpose or by accident...it's awesome! Usually it makes the papers when a baby is an unplanned UC around here...lol!

No I hadn't noticed the trend....although I do read these threads announcing the babies and get jealous of the short labors. My fingers are SOOOOOO crossed I get to experience the same!
Just is so hard for me to imagine like with Aislin....she said it started at 7;30 and the baby was here at 9:45....just seems mind blowing for me!

I am CERTAIN I will add to the big baby list....at LEAST an 8lb 5 oz...but probaby bigger.
Here is hoping I can keep the short labor thing going!

just wanted to add to allgirls unplanned UC comment--- It was all over the news today because some woman in Phx gave birth to her twins in her toilet! Surprise-- she says she didn't realize she was in labor.

My first gut reaction was to write some 'silly' woman, but I don't know the background story....

I have noticed the big baby trend...although it hadn't clicked in my brain that these babies were big. My mw said that my baby should be around 9lbs and to get an u/s to check it out. I refused it bc it's unreliable and now am having a homebirth with a difft mw. I don't think 9lbs is huge in comparison to my dd who was just under 8lbs...Didn't know that 1lb was that much of a difference!?!

I do attribute it to the healthy-fed mom though, I think it is a contribution to it. My current mw told me to stop drinking milk and only eat organic meat (if eating meat) and that shoud level the baby's size until birth. She says it's b.c of the hormones. (I was addicted to drinking milk...but not really to eating meat & any meat we do eat is grain fed w/o hormones...) Anyone else hear of that?
