Lactation Consultant Training??

Just wondering if anyone knows what it takes to become a LC in Canada...specificly in British Columbia. My community doesn't have one and I think about it every time I hear someone say...."My baby wouldn't nurse" or "He/She wouldn't latch on" or "My milk wasn't good".
Just today I overheard a young new mom telling someone that her babe couldn't suck hard enough so she gave up nursing after 2 days. 2 days!!!!! I didn't even get milk until 5 days post partum.
So if anyone has info it would be greatly appreciated!

I know the highest level of LC is the IBCLC(International Board Certified Lactation Consultant). Once your certified with them you can work anywhere in the world. They have a webpage, www.ilca.org. Hope that help.

I'm in Canada too and working toward my certification. I am so glad to here you are considering doing this certification too.

For more about the certification, visit http://www.iblce.org/

We've had a number of discussions about IBCLC's off late
Here are just two threads (I just searched for "IBCLC" in this forum)

routes to becoming an LC

Lactation consultants advising formula use???
In the second thread there is discussions about the IBCLC certification process being revamped.

Lastly, do you have a LLL group in your community? For now you could direct the mamas there. If there isn't a group, and you agree with LLL's philosophies, you could start a group. I've chosen to get my IBCLC training through LLLC. It will take me about five years of being a leader to have enough hours to qualify to take the IBCLC exam. I'm a leader applicant right now, working toward my Leadership.

Good luck

Thanks for the info. Wow!!! That is quite a bit of work, I think the first step for me is to find out about LLL here. I know they had one but I don't think they are meeting right now.

It may seem overwhelming at first, but as long as you're not in a hurry you'll probably do it easily

I forgot to mention that you can start up an independent moms support group if you like. if there is a local group. Many mainstream moms don't care for LLL (because of things they've heard LLL Leaders do/say etc.) even
