church vent!

Thread Starter
Today I visited a church a friend invited us.
I sat all the way in the last row in the back.
I started nursing ds & this usher type woman came up & threw a tissue at me & told me to cover up.
Then she said I would have to nurse elsewear!
She took me upstairs to the bathroom!
I was so upset...
and even more upset when I saw the woman in the same row bottlefeeding....

that's horrible! I would send them a complaint letter and never go there again!

What did your friend say?
I hope you left once the lady showed you the bathroom!

This is one church I would NEVER go back to. Not a very kind or welcoming place.

What exactly can one cover with a tissue?

: How rude! I'm so sorry you got treated like that! Maybe a nice leagl letter will teach them.

I feel so horrible about my post now.

Heck you can come to my church anytime, no one will throw tissues at you here.

Wow, as a member of our church's welcome comittee, we'd never do something like taht to a new person! Not to mention the fact that in many states there is a fine for something like that. Just a question, how old was the woman who did this? I find older/elderly women less accepting of my decision to nurse in public.

If you choose to send them a letter, make it on a notecard showing Mary nursing Jesus, a rather common theme in Renaissance art.

That's pretty lousey! Hats off to your bravery!

I chickened out in church today. Normally I'm a nurse anywhere, anytime person, but I was also the new person at a tiny little start-up church in a community center. I asked the usher where I could go to nurse and the only place was in the kitchen. I guess I was used to my old church where they had this awesome nursing room with comfy couches, pillows, and a one-way view window--I was always eger to go in there because it was sooooo comfy, sigh.

I would be appalled if someone did that to a visitor in my church! Talk about chasing off the flock!

I nursed my 14.5 month old today in church for the first time (usually I nurse in the mother's room, but today it was really full. YEA!). I don't think I got even one hairy eyeball for doing so.

Yet another reason why I don't go to church. UGH! It's not the message, its the hypocritical, uncaring, intolerant, close minded people that turn me off.

If anyone ever did that to me in any setting they would have a fight on their hands. Sanctity and sermon be darned.

Fortunately the few times I have had a nursing babe at a church with me (UU church at that) I never had a problem.

I would definitelysend them a note lie the pp suggested with a picture of Mary nursing Jesus. Remind them that if it was right for Him it is right for your child.

Ughhhh How rude and impolite!!!!
-took you upstairs to the bathroom?
people are so backwards!-- and there she was with a bottle then!
I hope you feel less upset and more empowered after that.
sometimes- people really do need church. at least theres some hope for them.(major sarcasm- oops)

Use the front row. That way only the clergy will see, and they will be more accepting.

If you had been in the front row, the clergy may have noticed and stopped the old bitty.

Please remember this was one person who was trying to impose their moral code on you. We feel much differently than she does. Nursing is a beautiful thing. Bottles are ugly.

I had a similiar experience, the last time I went to church. They told me that they wouldn't feed my baby a bottle of expressed breast milk, and offered me free formula instead. After coming to this site for info, so many emails came from this site, that the church called me, and explained their position. I still haven't been back to church. I feel closer to god without them.

Mamas who work tirelessly to express milk for their babies and feed them using a bottle are beautiful as well. Could we not make our point at the expense of others' feelings?

Y'all should come to my church. Practically all the mamas nurse, and we have a whole crowd of babywearers, too.
