Hebrews breastfed

Until at least three. When Samuel's mom wanted a baby so so bad she promised God her first born son. When he was ready to be weaned she took him to the priest and left him to become all that he could be. Accompanying them was a three year old ram to serve as her sacrifice. The deduction there is that they were the same age.

When Samuel was weaned, he was old enough to be left with Eli for the service of the tabernacle (1 Sam. i,24). As no public provision was made for the children of priests until they were three years of age, it is probable that they were not weaned sooner (2 Chron. xxxi,16; 2 Macc. vii,27). [McClintock & Strong, Volume X, p.892]

Awesome! Thank you so much for this info! I knew that it would have been a case of EBF, but had never thought to connect the passage in 2CH with 1SA 24-25!

As for the church's reply...sounds pretty generic and never comes out to state their position on breastfeeding (and where it "should" take place).

No no, I don't think they were blaming the mom at all. When the pastor said this:

Quote:
I am reminided that all have sinned and come short of his glory, the good thing is that God's grace is sufficient for us because his strength is made perfect in our weakness.
He was talking about them (the usher) being in the wrong. When he said this:

Quote:
I am sure that God is able to repair the heart of the young lady if she was offeneded or hurt by the act of our usher.
He was responding to me in my original email to him because I went on about what if they turned someone off from Christianity and this baby never got the opportunity to learn about God and Jesus because of them. He was trying to reassure me that the thoughtless or ignorant act of their usher would never keep anyone from God.

No, I think it was a well -meant reply to my original email on behalf of the nursing mother. I bet it isn't the attitude of the whole church and by the nursing mother getting this brought to the attention of the church, they can address it with their members and make sure it doesn't happen again. It NEVER SHOULD HAVE HAPPENED TO HER IN THE FIRST PLACE ( to her) but the next best thing is seeing that it doesn't happen to anyone else there.

Hi. Hebrew here.

I crack myself up sometimes.

Anyway, the Jews-nursing-to-age-3 thing is actually the expected time schedule. The Talmud says that nursing continues until the age of 4 or 5, if it is what the child needs.

Just to get that tangent cleared up ... carry on ...

I was acctually pointing to the Jewish texts for one of the posters to reference to back up the assumption that Jesus was breastfed till at least 4. Since the Christian Bible is extremely foggy IRT his life between infancy and adulthood.

Thanks for providing the info Remembering that Jesus was raised Jewish, He was raised following the Torah and the Talmud, as well as Mary, so it is indeed logical to look there for the support for the argument that he was nursed that long.

Okay, I only scanned this thread and checked out the church's website and I want to bring another perspective. First for the record, I am a nursing Mama and beleive that when babe is hungry babe eats, plain and simple regardless of location.

However with that said as an African American woman whose Dad is a minister, I noticed that the pastor was African American as was his wife, I am wonderiing if this is a predominantly Black church? If so that could say a lot behind the usher's actions.

I am sure that many folk here know that the breastfeeding rates among Black women are much lower than white women. In a nutshell breastfeeding it's not the norm in the black community, the figures support that. Not that it excuses the usher's behavior but it puts it in a different context. Just the other day my Dad asked me if I was "still" breastfeeding and my babe is only 13 weeks. My mom's birth mom had 7 kids ranging from my Mom who was the oldest (if alive she'd be 51) to her youngest at 32 and she did not breastfeed any of them, in fact she thinks its funny that I nurse. After all as she puts it bottles are easy. :

All said it still sucks but if the usher is working from a place that breastfeeding is not the norm and its the cultural norm (moreso than just greater culture) I can understand that. As far as the pastor his answer sounds like what I would expect a pastor to say again in a cultural context that nursing is not the norm.

Just my 2 cents.
