City Council Meeting-BFing Ordinance in Chandler AZ

Please come out to the 10/27 Chandler City Council meeting where the proposed Breastfeeding Ordinance is up for discussion and vote. There are 2 proposals up for consideration. One says breastfeeding is permitted anywhere in the city, public or private. The other says the same thing, but has a clause that says that private businesses can make their own rules. Obviously, we want private property covered as well.

They have been trying to drag this out, hoping we will go away. Please pack up the kids, significant others, and bring your friends to the council meeting. We need to let them know this matters and that we aren't going to let this die.

The mayor (Boyd Dunn) and a councilman (Bob Caccamo) are up for re-election next year. The mayor's opponent supports BF rights, but the mayor has been noticeably silent on this issue. We need to remind him that breastfeeding families vote, too!!!

It is next Thursday, October 27,2005 at 7:00 pm. The Council Chambers are in the downtown public library, 2nd floor. The library is 22 Delaware St, roughly at Arizona and Chandler Blvd.

Even if you don't want to speak, fill out a card saying you support breastfeeding in public and private places. If you can't be there in person please email them at Mayor&Council@chandleraz.gov

Thanks, Mamas!!!

I'm a resident of Tempe, but will e-mail them anyway. I'd like this to get some media attention and hopefully start a trend; AZ deperately needs a BF statute protecting the right to nurse in public!

I don't live in Arizona, but I visit there often so it is important to me to have the rights of breastfeeding moms and babies protected in Arizona. Hopefully I will be able to compose a letter to help with your cause and send it off before the meeting!

Even if you aren't a Chandler resident, please come to the council meeting if you're in the area. Last time, the speaker that seemed to have the biggest impact on the mayor was a woman from Gilbert that said she spent all her money in Chandler, but would be starting a boycott in response to the stupid administrative directive. He kind of got this "oh, S@#t!" look on his face when he realized that other people around the valley were watching and that this could have an economic impact.

Even if you emailed before, we need you to keep up the pressure. Send another email, phone call, or letter saying you support an ordinance that upholds letting babies eat on public and private property. We need all the pressure we can get!!!

We have been told that if we pack the room, we will almost certainly get this ordinance passed.

Keep spreading the word, post it to other boards you frequent, visit businesses, talk to your neighbors, etc.

We can do this - we have support from 3 councilmembers, we just need to push one more over on our side!!

Hope to see you there - children and babies are welcome, this is a family values issue!

Just bumping this up for tonight. I just heard about this on the radio. I am thinking of going and was wondering if just showing up is good enough?
My little boy is 1 year old today and I want to go show support since we do like to nurse around town!

YES! Just go! Trust me, there are a LOT of people who are well prepared to speak on this if necessary, all you have to do is show up and be there in silent support (ok, well, probably not quite SILENT with a babe...)

I went to the last one and I was so relieved to not feel like I had to talk! Seriously, everything I was thinking was said by somebody, so I could just sit and nod.

Go mamas!!!! I wish I could be there tonight to celebrate your impending victory! I am in spirit always!

First Chandler

Chandler set an example-

I really hope we can get the states attention!

WooHoo! Now Tucson's council can't pussyfoot around saying they can't tell private businesses what to do! Thanks Chandler!

This Tuesday should be fun!

Best of luck on Tuesday, I really hope Tucson takes a stand! I think one of the strongest points was the vast # of businesses that said they didn't believe BF legislation would hurt their business, along with how many supported it! The Chamber took a poll and found 90% of business owners supported BF-

I've written my letters to Tucson, can't wait to hear how it goes!
