Art Classes?

Just curious.

How much would you pay per lesson or month (for weekly lessons) for art classes (or would you pay at all?). Here are the details:

At a private home, with a studio set up in a large basement (good lighting etc).
Basic supplies provided (paper, pencils, paints etc).
Smaller groups (max 10 kids at a time - fewer for younger groups).

Classes offerred for:
Preschoolers - basically just let them have fun with crayons, markers and paints (so mom doesn't have to deal with it at home). A little more of a craft focus than just strictly art.

Elementary aged kids - a little more formal, exploration of color, different media. "Fundamentals of perspective" etc.

High school - focus on pencil sketching with some color work thrown in as well.

Instructor does not have a formal teaching degree, but has been painting and drawing for years, and has a good knowledge of art history and art principles.

Instructor is a SAHM with 2 younger children

I would pay something if I was putting my child in a class like that- at least compensate for the supplies provided and what I would pay a babysitter for that time period.

I would think $10- $12 per session.

My dd takes classes like you described, except it is in a library room.
It is mostly elementary kids, with a few middle school aged. She does focus on technique. The first class focused on shading, she said that was one of the important steps in drawing to learn. Plus every week she shows work from a famous artist and talks to the kids about it and how it applied to todays lesson.

It is only $5.00 per kids. But I think she charges such a low amount becuase before the first day of class, she had a full classroom. Our HS group makes up most of the class.

But I would still have payed 10 15$ for the class.

I pay $10 Cdn (about $8 US) for a weekly two-hour class for each of my three older kids. The class is about 10 kids, ages 7-11. The teacher has no formal qualifications except that she's a brilliant textile and print artist herself and has an incredible gift for inspiring the kids with semi-structured yet open-ended project ideas. She also spends a lot on high-quality supplies. Printing blocks, 80lb paper, artist-quality paints and dyes, etc..

I value the experience the kids are getting with a variety of high-quality media and the gift the teacher has in encouraging creativity while also teaching skills (a very delicate balance).

I think we're getting a heck of a deal.

well I am currently teaching art on my own for my dd. We use library books and just my own limited experience. My father is an artist (drawing, and steel and clay sculpture) so he has promised to help more when she's older as well. And I think art is in my blood.

When she gets to a level where more instruction would be needed, then I'd pay for lessons (and I'd try to find a balance between affordable and quality).

We have paid for some pottery classes - but they were at a community centre (these go anywhere from $25 to $150 for about 8-10 sessions) Most include supplies, some do not.

I would shop around and see what other places are charging. And then go with the average amount.
