Circumstraint

I realize the idea may be a little out there but I am a prop person. In my childbirth classes I have an epidural kit that I let my students get familiar with, an amniohook, sometimes I may even have someone's donated placenta to show. I was thinking, while I was at the hospital the other day in the "circumcision room," that an eye-opening prop may be a Circumstraint. Not quite sure where I'd get one though??

I don't know about circumstraints, but you can buy complete circumcision kits on ebay. Maybe take one of those to class? Let people see all the sharp instruments that would mutilate their baby boys.

That's a really great idea, thanks! I might just enlarge a circ board picture to illustrate my point...until I find a Circumstraint that's been tossed outside in a hospital's dumpster!

I hope y'all didn't think I was going to buy a new one...there's a lot better ways I could think of spending 179 bucks than on a cheap piece of molded plastic used for mutilating baby boys.

I'll bet if I keep looking on E-bay long enough one will turn up.

I do have a pair of circ hemostats. On our last day in the nursery last week the nurse gave us all a pair of autoclaved hemostats from the circ kits. She told us that they can only sterilize them twice before they have to toss them. Gee thanks, what a present, a pair of hemostats used to slice 2 innocent babys' foreskins :

It doesn't matter where it's made, they are cheap to make. They appear to be vacuum formed plastic and I used to be in a business that did plastic vacuum forming. The plastic costs probably $5 or $6. The velcro straps maybe another $2 so less than $10 for materials. The box for shipping might cost another $2 so, around $10-$12 total cost The time to vacuum form it would be 30-40 seconds, add another 3-4 minutes to attach the velcro straps and drop it into a box, so less than 5 minutes manufacturing time. Add a little overhead cost and shipping and the total cost to produce comes up to $15 - $18 total. Somebody else is making a killing on baby boys genitals.

Usually you have to have a medical license to show to buy the supplies... usually anyway.

That depends on what you're buying and who you're buying it from. I don't think it would be difficult to buy the supplies for circumcisions. Mohels do it all of the time and they are not licensed.

If you look at sites on-line some of them mention that proper verification is needed for purchase but others do not. It really is amazing what folks have access to on auction sites...circumcision supplies included.

Sadly showing them a video of the actual procedure and talking about sensation and nerve ending loss is seldom enough to change their minds...that's part of the reason why I wanted to try a different approach. Seeing the circ board first hand enlightened some of my fellow nursing
students, I just figured it might work for parents, too.

Honestly I think most folks already have their minds made up one way or another before they hear my schpeel on the subject. I just feel that if I give them the facts, show a video of what their sons will endure (and in our area w/o pain control), do the 15 square inches demo, and give them all the resources and they still circ...while I won't ever support circumcision...they have made an informed choice. I don't agree w/ the decision but I did my best. I've managed to save a few foreskins over the past few years and that is mainly what keeps me going.

I still ache for those boys whose parents know better and still had it done.
