Yooper Mamas, Say Ya to da UP, EH? - Page 77

Happy New Year Yooper Mamas!

It's me again, with yet another chance to move to the UP. We're heading north tomorrow for a Friday job interview for DH (the last one was a no-go).
This one seems more serious, but we're trying to stay "cautiously optimistic."
If he gets this job, I get to be a SAHM so I am thinking about how to hook up with some like-minded parents in the area. Are there any AP/natural family type playgroups in Marquette? I've checked out the Kid's Museum, and some other family events through the library. Any other suggestions? We'd spend a lot of time outside, I'm sure.

At this point, we'd start off in Negaunee, at my grandma's house (she's 93 and spends the winters with my aunt in Au Train). That may work into a longer term living situation to help provide her care, or we may end up buying or renting our own place come spring/summer...it's up in the air.

Thanks for your thoughts.
Hope you all had lovely holidays and are staying warm and toasty.

So....he got the job!!!

We don't have a firm start date yet, but we'll be moving to Negaunee at some point in February! Yippee for being Yoopers again!

Been a long time since I posted here, and a lot has changed.

For all purposes, I am now single. My divorce will be finalized in a week. I have $3,000 of tax money to move on, and I am looking to move to either Houghton or Marquette. I really want to work in the animal field, preferable in the shelter or at a vet's office. I will be looking to rent a home that allows pets, and is under $550 a month. Can anyone give me some advice?

So sorry to hear. I am not from that area, but I wish you the best of luck.

DH and I have our house in Menominee for sale and we are talking about buying land outside of Marquette for our homestead. Let me know if you know of anything good for sale.

Well, congratulations! I haven't been signing in here, lately. I just don't have the time!

Your aunt (in AuTrain) is closer to my neck of the woods. I'm about 15 miles from AuTrain, halfway between AuTrain and Mqt. There is not necessarily an AP playgroup, but there is yooper nursers a nursing group that meets the fourth monday of every month. pm me for more details.

How old is your LO? There is quite a collection of AP families in the area. The Mqt. food co-op is a good place for connections and information. The library is also really awesome.

Like I said...what else do you want know? let me know when you get here!

it can be tough to find a pad under $550/mo. unless it is small like 2 br...college student style. Of course, there are deals about...you just have to put that energy out there, if you really want it.

the job situation is not all that super here...it's not to be the bearer of disappointment that I am here...just trying to give you a realistic view.

My advice would be to seek out the individual vets' offices and shelters and contact them directly. here is a good site for looking for jobs:

Hi all!
We're here, finally. It's been a rough weekend, moving and trying to settle into my grandma's house with our one year old, our dog and our cats; not to mention our whole 3 bedroom house tucked into storage in her basement and garage.

The sunshine is so refreshing this weekend! And the warm temps don't hurt either...but everyone is telling us that we should expect the last huge March snowfall.

Heaving a big sigh and now getting to the work of this big adjustment.

Welcome to the U.P. haurelia!
MPJJ, any news on the move? Sending and saying for you.

Thanks for asking! The move is still possible, we are really low on money but DP is working a temp job making really good money. It is possible that after the job is done we might have enough to make the move. Moving is no longer an option, as we are having a really bad feud with our neighbors over their barking dog, and today DP discovered that all the lug nuts on his tire were dangerously loose... after sitting in our driveway for the last 3 days... hmmm, how suspicious. So, yeah, we're definately moving, and we're gonna try to make it a move that we will be happy with.

Hi mama! I'm Sally, one of the organizers for the breastfeeding group up here. Lots of AP mamas in that.

I'm hoping to go to the co -op dinner tonight...Lilian (my eldest) is snotty nosed though. We'll see.

Also, if you have facebook let me know and I can invite you to the facebook group.

did I write that the bf support group is the fourth Monday? If I did, I misinformed you all.

There is a meeting tonight (Monday, March 15) at 6pm in the Shiras Room at Peter White Public Library

I won't be there as I have a bead class to teach.
Thanks everybody!
Yes, Sally, I am on FB. I'll PM you. Thanks.

Didn't make it to the co-op dinner, darn it. But, things are settling down a bit here. We're all getting a little more comfortable with our intergenerational living situation, and DH and I have started house-hunting. Henry, my baby, is less stressed now that his molar has erupted and he's back to his sunny, busy self instead of being a teething, crabby wreck. And we slept last night! Hooray!

I think Grandma thinks we're quite nutty, but she's just not been exposed to folks who co-sleep, baby-wear, extended nursing, etc.

Hope everyone is well this weekend!

Just moved to Marquette area last week

I'm so excited that I found this thread. After being out of the area for 7 years (lived here for 4 years in college and a one year stint two years later) my husband and I moved back with our almost two year old son. I am soooo glad to be here. I have family in the area but am most definitely searching for others moms/families to connect with. After living in an area surrounded by people with very mainstream parenting values and approaches I can't wait to talk with others who have a more AP approach. We practice elimination communication, babywearing, radical unschooling, extended breastfeeding, baby signing etc. If anyone has information on groups (dates, times, places, etc.) that you could tell me about I would really appreciate it. And if you'd be interested in meeting up don't hesitate to e-mail me directly. And if neither of those things happen I'll probably see you around at the the library, co-op, nature center, children's museum, etc.

Hi healthy momma!
Welcome back to the UP!
Me, my man and our son just moved back here last month; I have lots of family here too, and grew up here for part of my childhood. DH got a job, we're living with my grandma while we negotiate the house-buying process, and we're feeling out some connections here too!

While I don't have much inside info about stuff going on here (still finding that out for myself!), I'd love to meet like-minded folks. My son is 14 months old, and I'm not working outside of our home, so we're pretty flexible if you'd like to meet up sometime. Are you living in Marquette? We're in Negaunee.

Anyway, cheers to you! And welcome back. Just in time for the last snow hurrah, I suppose!

Hey ladies! We need to get together soon. Maybe we will see you out and about this week!
Hi ladies!

I guess it's about time I stop denying that I'm about to make a huge life change
and admit I'm moving up to the UP

We live about a half hour north of Detroit. My husband has a new job in Negaunee and will be coming up in 2 weeks. I'll be finishing out the school year with the kids and be up in June. I have a 9 year old girl, 7 year old boy, and 4 year old girl.

Looking forward to meeting you all and making some new friends!

Christa

hi christa!
pm me when you get here! we'll get you connected!
sorry I took so long to reply! I don't know why I didn't receive a notification!

Wow no one online much? Had to post this because I think that its important that the people who are representing a more natural life style really think about how they come across.

The other day I was contacted by Houghton County health department about breast feeding support. I told them about LLL and they said thats the problem, woman feel that it is to clique and feel not welcome!

Just giving some feed back, I know its not me havent been to a meeting for almost 2 years.
